hiv infection?

Hi doctors,

85 days ago my friends and I went to a site striptease I was pretty drunk and I can only remember that I kissed a sex worker we exchange saliva I don’t know what else could have happened, I can assure that there was no sex or penetration because I did not undress her, in addition there was many sober friends and they tell me that were slightly passionate kisses, I can also remember when I went out of the place.

I cannot be sure if in those kisses was blood involved, perhaps bleeding gums or sores in her mouth, that day I had sore throat. She was very strange, she was dressed elegantly, she was wearing a turtle neck sweater, she was very pretty and when my friends asked her for a striptease she refused and only wanted sex. What it makes me doubt of her, maybe she was wearing a turtle neck sweater to hide the swollen lymph nodes or other evidence of infection with HIV in her body. This event happened in South America in the city of Bogota, Colombia

9 days later I had a cold, two months later I had a strange flu, the throat was not hurting, no fever, I had some headache, nasal congestion and little cough, it was a 3 days flu approximately. For a month I have been feeling a sort of electrical impulses in the bottom of the armpits and sometimes on the neck. Also develop a mild skin rash on the dorsal side of my right hand that appeared two months ago and today, while I had a pain in one of left hand fingers, I looked HIV symptoms on the internet and it could be a peripheral neuropathy. I wonder if what I described above may indicate an HIV infection. It is important to say that before this event I have always practiced safe sex with my ex-girlfriend my unique couple ever.

Unfortunately I cannot get tested until October or November 2010, and have no access to health services. What cares must I have? Should I keep worrying? Must I get tested?

Welcome to the Forum. Your English is fine, I wish my Spanish was as good.  I read your interactions with Vance on the HIV Prevention Community site and agree with him completely.  While I cannot explain this woman's behavior, I can tell you the there is virtually no risk from kissing and exchange of saliva.  no one has EVER gotten HIV from kissing, even deep kissing and even when one or both persons involved in the kissing have cuts, sores, or blood in their mouths.  This was a completely no risk event and there is no medical reason for you to seek testing.

As for your symptoms, that they came on following the events you describe is coincidence or perhaps related to some non-HIV, non-STD community acquired viral infection (like the flu) that you have acquired.  It is not HOIV, both because you are not at risk and because the symptoms began too soon to be the acute retroviral syndrome.  Your symptoms are due to something else.

I hope this comment helps.  Take care.  EWH
