Memory loss and confusion

Hello My mum fell down the stairs about 3 weeks ago, she banged her head and was in a coma when she arrived in hospital. When she arrived in hospital they had to put a tube down her throat which in turn punctured a lung and some how it stopped the heart for about 5 minutes. The day it happened the doctors didnt think she would pull through. the initial head injury from falling down the stairs was not too bad but the heart stopping for 5 minutes was more severe.

She has been in intensive care for about 3 weeks now and has made a great recovery every day there is improvement. She has been signed off by the neurologist and is moving into the neurology step down ward tomorrow.

She is awake now and seems to be doing well except for confusion and not remembering things. I understand it is still early days but it is upsetting to see this. She seems to know stuff but it all seems mixed up she knows her address but keeps asking where home is. She also keeps asking if she is married to her husband.

does this normally sort itself out with time or is this going to be permanent?
Thanks in advance

Hi there.

Unfortunately, it is rather hard to predict if this memory lapses would be permanent since as you have described, the blow to the head was nearly fatal for her and there is not telling the extent of damage the brain received.  Post head trauma amnesia and incoherence can do persist and only time will tell if this can recover or not.

However, you and the entire family can be her guide in the full path of recovery.  constant stimulus with conversations, pictures, and just by being there would surely be beneficial in terms of her recovery.
