Post Concussion

Hey,
On June 25th 2009 I have a car accident, A truck rear-ended me and the amblance took me to the hospital had x-rays and Cat scans told me nothing was broken i just have bad whip lash. i had back pain but steriods got rid of that. but i have headaches everyday since then. i Went to a neurologist and he dignosed me with Post concussion syndrom. i hit my head pretty good, 1 the whip lash (i cant remember if i hit it on anything in my car) but as i was exiting to see what he did i smacked it on the metal bar getting out and then when the paramedic arrived i was laying in my car as they got me out the car he was holding my neck up right and i smacked it again on the metal bar getting out the car again. My head hurts as soon as i wake up in the morning and through out the day on and off the doctor gave me hydroco and it kinda helped a lil but made me feel sick so he gave me fioricet (somthing like that) but it dont help much. today when i woke up i had a nose bleed im wondering if it had anything to do with it. The neurologist said it could take months to heal and you may even have symptoms for years. Im feeling more angry and crying alot more. i cant really put my hair up it hurts to much and i just dont no what to do. anyone had this? what shall i do?

The are several possible etiologies for your headaches. These whiplash injuries do not heal well without use of an axial traction device, but we re-discover the wheel every year, and many young doctors have never heard of this treatment modality. The axial traction devices are inexpensive and do not require a prescription. They pull the cervical vertebra gently appart to permit the mashed-up tissue to heal and regenerate. The devices are not used continually but several times a day, for short periods of from ten to thirty minutes. Initially, for the first week,  an anti-inflammatory such as prednisone is helpful, and thereafter ibuprufin. You don't want to get hooked on the prednisone, but initially it reduces inflammation considerably. Another treatment is use of MEDICAL grade DSMO diluted. DSMO is NOT an approved medication, however it is an extremely powerful anti-inflamatory. Use of DSMO on the neck is controversial. It is also essential to stay well hydrated. I would not use DSMO wihout consulting your family physician.

Hi, i was just reading these stories  and other people  have post concussion syndrome :( I have it to. Right before my 19th birthday  I was a passenger driving with my friends. I was in the back seat, when the driver was speeding down a curvy road at 80km/h .FYI we were not drinking, he was just  a silly boy driving his car like a normal irresponsible young man. He didn't give himself time to slow down when he came up to a 90 degree left corner .He ended up driving directly into a yellow cement barrier. The  mustang went over the cement barrier  down an enbankment and into a wire fence. In the accident i hit my head on the head rest. My brain hit the front of my skull and back from the force of the vehicle comming to a instant stop. I have whip blash aswell. At the hospital the doctor said i had a level 4  severe concussion, that would go away after 10-14 days. But it didn't go anywhere. For the first  5 months i suffered with horrible head aches, dizzyness, concentration/ processing / thinking problems, slow movements and slow speech, balance was horrible, i would sway back and forth like a drunk person, couldn't multi task, couldn't sleep well and my memory was absolutely horrible. Constant ringing in my ears and and even seeing double. I couldn't do anything.  My mom says i had no personality and i  was like a zombe. I spent many hours on the couch watching tv. I got  a brain trainer twice a week. Slowly working on my cognitive thinking , because i wasn't normal.  I went to Physio twice a week which helped my balance,  but anything more would cause me to  get head ache. I couldn't be active ( not even go for a walk because i would get a head ache) . I use to be a runner so i was very motivated to get better and begin running, but reality set in and i wasn't going to be running for a long time. At around the sixth month i began to feel a bit better. My head aches were down to 2-4 a week ( for the last month ) and the rest  of my symptoms were still around a bit but i could do more. Before the accident i was a cashier at a grocery store. I attempted going back  to work twice a week for an hour at a time. After 2 shifts my symptoms were already comming back. First thing my mom noticed was my memory was geting worse again. And i was also geting head aches. I even began driving, just a little bit around town. Doing normal activities was taking a toll on me. After 3 weeks  all my symptoms were back just like they were 4 months ago. Some even worse. I had to stop working and driving and doign everyting. Its now been 3 weeks and i am doing a little bit better , but not really. All i do is rest all day everyday. My neuropsyche appointment is next week and i will find out whats wrong with my brain. Today my doctor said i might have scared brain tissue or something. So i will be going in for a MRI sometime soon. Unfortunatly,  my doctor said post concussion doesn't have a time line and it can stay around for years. He tells me 2 years from the accident  is a good idea of when i'll be  going back to normal. It has been 7 and a half months so far so i have a little while to go. I appolgive if this doesn't make sense. I haven't writen anything like this  for a very long time... Its sad to read that other are going thru what i am, but atleast im not alone.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
With the symptoms persisting, it would be wise to get a MRI of brain and cervical spine. Maybe you can consult your PCP and get reference for another neurologist or maybe you can go straight to an ER. You could be having a subdural hematoma that would not have developed when you first had a CT. Some other traumatic brain injuries too take time to develop. You should get it investigated, ofcourse it could also be concussion.

Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
