Can We Get Insured?

My stepdad suffered a heart attack a few months ago and had surgery. All of this was covered by insurance, but my parents just received a notice saying the insurance is discontinuing policies for everyone in my state. With my stepdad's past medical history, my parents are extremely upset and worried about finding a new provider. Will they even be able to get approved for a policy? I hate to see them going through this dilemna. They have to have insurance, because they won't be able to afford his doctor/prescription bills on their income.

Dear RMSTeacher,

Insurability of your stepfather by an individual & Family plan will depend on his State of residence. In most States he may not qualify for traditional Individual & Family plan in which case he needs to find out if he qualifies for COBRA. (COBRA is continuation of his group coverage.)
If he doesn’t qualify for COBRA he can call eHealthInsurance that is a nationwide online broker at 1-800-977-8860 & they can advise him on his options.
In addition to the above you can visit http://www.coverageforall.org/our_services.htm#apps a nonprofit organization for a matrix specific to his State.

Sincerely,

Amir Mostafaie

Good Morning.  I just saw your post about your mom and step-dad's situation.  I am a Health Insurance Broker in North Carolina.  I do not represent an insurance company, but rather my customers.  Many insurance companies label people with heart attacks and pre-existing conditions as "uninsurable", which is very unfortunate.  These are the people that need insurance the most.  Depending on what state you live in, as well as details on his heart attack( did he have surgery, etc.) he might be insurable with a major medical company.  If he is deemed "uninsurable", there is an association that is backed by the federal gov't that will provide benefits to everyone regardless of their situation.  This is not the ideal company to go with, but it is much better than having nothing.  I would like to help you try and find some sort of coverage for your parents.  Depending on what state they are in, I may or may not be able to write them a policy.  Either way I would like to help.  Please email me at justin.***@**** or give me a call at 919-749-4295.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Have a great day!
