Getting Money's Worth from Hearing Aids

With all the recent scientific articles about hearing loss and dementia/Alzheimers's, and others showing that so many people are not satisfied with their hearing aids, it makes me ask the question:   Do people who sell and fit hearing aids have to meet certain "fitting" standards?   If not, how do patients know they will get their money's worth from hearing aids?
