Mucus stuck in throat

When I awake during the night, I often notice mucus stuck in my throat, even when I have no cold or sinus infection.  During the daytime this can also happen and it is always colorless and not accompanied by nausea.  I'm worried about possible damage to my esophagus if I keep clearing my throat.  Is this dangerous?

Hi Nan,

You might want to post this in the Ear, Nose and Throat forum: http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Ear--Nose--Throat/show/70. This is the hearing loss forum. :)

Is this mucus problem new? If so, when did it begin? Was anything happening at the time that might have a connection to it?

Your esophagus cannot be damaged by clearing your throat. Your larynx (voice box) could be. Make sure you clear it gently, also drink plenty of water.

This is often caused by milk allergy or by acid reflux.  Your health would benefit from removing this irritant, whichever it is.
