Phelps Syndrome

My friend's son has just been diagnosed with 'Phelps Syndrome'.  Her son has had cochlear implants and has only just been given this diagnosis.  He is now 6.  She is trying to get more information on this syndrome regarding developmental delays etc. and is coming up empty.  Apparently this is a syndrome that was named after a Dr. Phelps that was deaf.  Is there a different technical name for this syndrome?

My son who is 14 has Phelps Syndrome as well.  He has been diagnosed at the age of 8.  He still has fairly good hearing in his right ear, but significant loss in his left.  I have been searching for years on information regarding Phelps Syndrome and have had no luck.  My son used to go see Dr. Papsin at Sick Kids, but is now back at his E.N.T specialist.  Genetic testing sound like a idea for me.  Since I just came back from E.N.T. appointment regarding my 11 year old son, who has a loss in his right ear.  Going through the whole process again to make sure that he doesn't have Phelps like his brother.  It's a emotional roller coaster ride.
