Sepsis deadness

I have a 25 year old  friend who survived severe life threatening sepsis, yet after 6 weeks, became totally deaf supposedly from the antibiotics used to save his life.

He was told this was probably permanent.

Anything more I can do to help him, or research possible treatments?

How rare is this?
