Week-old Ear Injury Draining

My husband was punched quite hard in the right side of the head last Tuesday.
He lost most hearing in his right ear Wednesday morning so we went to the doctor who said he could only see redness and swelling. He recommended a hearing test and gave him a referral, but he did suggest  him to wait a day or two to see if there are any changes. On Thursday his ear popped and some hearing came back. Over the next couple days it popped a couple more times with no change. Tonight it popped and he can hear again perfectly, except now there is fluid coming from his hear as well. It is waxy and looks to have some clotted blood in it. Is he ok or should we get him to the hospital?
