my granddaughter was born with hearing loss, can she hear?

My 4 year old granddaughter did not pass the hearing test in the hospital as a newborn when she was born in one ear. Whenever my daughter took her to the doctor as a baby & toddler she wouldn't hold still for the test. So fast forward 3 1/2 years later. She was tested by my friend who's a speech pathologist at the elementary school where I work. She said that she had a mild problem (70 something?) in her right ear that could possibly affect her hearing when she's in an auditorium where the noise bounces off the walls or she may have balance problems. Today my daughter took her to a new pediatrician and he took a tympanometry test & he said that her ear drums didn't peak and aren't vibrating the way they should.  The only problems I've noticed as far as a speech problem is that she pronounces w's like l's (lotter instead of water) and she seems to get frustrated sometimes when using a cell phone. Sometimes she seems clumsy & when she twirls she will fall down after about the 3 or 4th twirl. Could this be some kind of progressive problem? I've looked on the internet & found nothing about a child who has normalacy except for the few things I mentioned. Thank you for any feedback.

ABR?

That is sad if that is all they do in this day and age of technology.

You need a pediatric audiologist who uses special techniques to get accurate assessments of hearing loss in children. Many regular audiologists just do an ABR when the child is very young but there are more specific tests that a child can be trained to respond to.

The sooner this is done, the better.

Speech pathologist for a hearing test?  Why not a podiatrist or a carpenter for that matter.

Really, speech pathologist can legally do hearing screening, and know very little about hearing, hearing diagnostics, anatomy & physiology etc.

Essentially, you need to have your g. son tested by an audiologist..  THE END.  I would consider all information provided by others as inconclusive until then.
