6mm VSD is normal (NO PERICARDIAL EFFUSION) CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE

HI,

I''m a male and my age is 30 unmarried. When i was studying 3rd class i was found with a hole ( a hair tip) in my heart and then the Dr advised it will be closed as i grow elder. But recently i took Echo test to ensure that the hole is closed but it was not. 6mm whole is in my heart.

Do i need surgery or i can live with this?

Thanks in advance
Praveen

As a matter of interest, did the rest of the echo report show any problems? How are your valves functioning? is the heart muscle moving within tolerances? any enlargement or thickening of muscle?

When you saw your Doctor did you mention your shortness of breath? I can't imagine it would be related to the hole, 6mm is quite small. There may come a time in the future where it needs closing, but this can be done more often nowadays using pcti. They go through the femoral artery in your leg and guided a closure device up into the heart, and deploy a closure device. Recovery is very quick indeed. There is a high possibility you could go the remainder of your natural life without a problem, nobody can tell.
Will it affect your marriage life? Well, if you get symptoms and the hole worsens, it will affect your life if married or not, but the repair is quite straightforward which means you will soon return to a normal quality of life. Whichever way you look at this, your prognosis is very good.

Thanks for the reply.

3 yrs back i was checked  and again checked this monday still it is 6mm.
The only symptom i see is i breathe heavly when i claim upstairs. Apart from this i do not find any other symptoms like not gaining weight or unable to lift weights (i was going to gym 2 yrs back i did all the workouts like others)

The only worry i have now is, will this hit my marriage life?

If you have no symptoms, I don't see the need for surgery. I believe it is considered a large hole if 9mm or greater. I would ask your Doctor how often he advises you have it checked, to ensure it's stable and still 6mm.
