DJ,
I had coarctation back in 1974 and last month had my aorta replaced with a mechanical valve. I am 35 years old. The valve replacement went well, however I did have some fluid build up on the heart sack which they had to drain out, but that was a fairly simple procedure. The fluid build up is not uncommon with the use of blood thinners and surgery; especially with patients at my age.
Was the coarctation due to a birth defect?
Good luck!!!
It is quite common for patients with aortic coarctation to eventually need surgery for a diseased aortic valve, as the two conditions often coexist. This should not pose any particular problem which your surgeon would not be aware of. Interestingly, high blood pressure persists many times even after repair of coarctation.
