Bad HDL/LDL ratio (Cholestrol)

Hi, I am 32 years male & I have recently done my general health check up and my Lipid profile ratios are very bad. My Triglyceride is 190, My HDL is 26, & my LDL is 174. My total cholestrol is 247.

I have been doing the tests regularly over the last five years and the cholestrol has progressively worsened from 210+ at age 26. My ECG, treadmill test, my echocardiogram is normal. I have a very strong family history of heart diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure. My sugar and BP is normal. My doctor has recommended an IMT (Ultrasound to check the thickness of the arteries in the neck) test and a CT angio of the coronaries and also going to put me on medication to control my cholestrol. I have done my IMT test and the results are normal.

My question is

1) Do i need to do a CT angio of the coronaries

2) Do I need to be put on medication to control my cholestrol.

3) Do you advise a second opinion, or the current course of action the best possible.

1.  Since you have no symptoms of CAD, I would not have the CT angio done.  Given your risk factors I would go ahead and start you on therapy for cholesterol lowering.  The information obtained from the CT would not impact my approach to your case.

2.  Yes.  Any of the statins are good in your case.

3.  My second opinion to you is to start exercising, eat well, get your weight under control, avoid second hand smoking exposure, control your blood pressure and start taking cholestrol lowering medicaitons.  Exercise and diet alone can completely reverse your cholesterol profile and lower your blood pressure.

Fruit Pectin Cholesterol Cure

I was diagnosed in June '07 from a May blood test.  Doc said it was hereditary and there was no dietary fix to be had.  Prescribed Lipitor at $3./day for the rest of my life!  I numbly bought the pills but Googled the drug before taking.  There is a 5.6% rate of severe muscular degeneration!  I never took them out of the wrapper.
Further Googles turned up an array of natural treatments but only one had scientific studies attached to a great deal of anecdotal evidence - FRUIT PECTIN.  The study was on pigs and the grapefruit rinds cured them.

5 months later all 5 indicators read NORMAL!...whereas all 5 were badly out of whack back in May.

The Cure:  Buy liquid fruit pectin, same as for jam and jelly making.  I found Certo brand at the Superstore for $3. a box which lasts about 3 weeks.  Mix 1 teaspoon with juice.  I like veggy juice or orange.  Take once a day for the first week and then 3 times per day hence.

Note that since my condition is hereditary I did not attempt to alter my eating habits at all.  I am a fit and trim man and have modified my eating habits decades ago to maintain appropriate weight to height ratio.  Andyprius is correct,  exercise and proper diet is not enough.  Anonymous 'Doctor', 'CCFheartMD-PB', is a shill for the drug companies.

Now that I am 'cured' I will drop my pectin intake to 1 teaspoon/day.  In Jan'08 I will be tested again to see in the lower maintenance dose is effective.

Good Luck to All,
Terry

I'm 72, and just recently started taking Lipitor, I was astounded to see my TC go from 242 to 136 in about three weeks. My downfall was hard candies. I don't know my entire Lipid panel yet as I am not due til Jan 08. I have great BP, HB, Tri  and under normal sugar. So sugar readings cannot be depended on. I had a 5 way bypass in 99 and just recently experienced unstable angina. The cutting out of sweets and watching my diet has vastly improved my health and eliminated the Angina. I have also worked out and walked for years but apparently that alone is not enough.  Andy
