Can't control my blood pressure

I am 50 and in great shape, I excersize at least one half hours everyday, with a mixture if cycling 20miles plus 45 mins weight training or jogging 3-5 miles and again 45 mins weight training. Have been doing this for the last ten years plus. I am 5.9 feet and weight 170lb about 11 stone 10. I eat exactly what is advised for me, fish, oats, chicken breast, lean meats, fruit veg. But my blood presure is always around 150-160/95-105 after been on 10mg rampril for a couple of years but found out it did nothing ,now I am on amias 16mg but again no change. Can anybody help me on this ad I worry about having a stroke. My dad has high blood presure but it's under great control with rampril 120-80.
Thanks
Steve

I am the same Steve, I have blood pressure readings off 150/95 now that I am on Amias 2MG my blood pressure has went up to 155/100plus.  I tried Atkins which did work in reducing my weight and blood pressure indeed, but found I could not sustain this diet regimen in the real world around me.  I was also on 2 different tablets and they both failed to reduce my blood pressure, so I stopped after consulting the doctor about side effects out weighing benefits.  Also my parents have HBP controlled.  Form this week I am trying to go vegetarian to an extent to see if this helps, no ground meat (animals live on land), only fish and greens and nuts and fruits from this point onwards for a few months to see if I can nip this on the butt once and for all.  Just to let you know, anything above 130 takes 5 years of your life for on going blood pressure readings according to the papers on HBP.  So don't ignore it and try and get it resolved, my issue has been going on 5 plus years so far, and I am 42.  All the best

I would also try about 200mg of CoQ10 per day.  My doctor said this a "must" for anyone over 40 as CoQ10 levels gets depleted with age.  Once blood levels of CoQ10 are driven up, blood pressure starts on a downward trend.  The results I get from diet, CoQ10, Magnesium and Fish Oil are better than those I had on medication.

Sometimes other medications can have a side effect of elevating your blood pressure.  For instance, if you happen to be on any type of corticosteroids for a sports injury, that could do it.  I unwittingly drank an herbal tea containing licorice for years, until I realized that it was running my blood pressure up.  Estrogen replacement therapy can do the same thing, for a lot of women.  Even NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen), if taken regularly, can do it.  You might want to review everything that goes into your mouth, including your salt intake.  As mentioned above, some people simply require more than one anti-hypertensive medication at the same time.

Steve, I think I may have a solution as I had similar problems last year at 47 years old. Parents have hypertension and take Ramipril, Norvasc and Coreg. Id been exercising for years and ate what I thought was a healty diet. Doctors told me it was just genetic. I was placed on 20mg of Lisinopril and it worked fine but the side effects were another story. I consulted with an alternative doc and was weaned of the meds in 6 months and today my BP runs about 116/62. What was the trick? My best guess is dropping meat, dairy and oil. As soon as did this the BP dropped quickly and my doctor had to reduce dosages every few weeks. Today I take CoQ10, Fish oil ang Magnesium for a maintenance regimen and feel great without those side effects. I think from a scientific standpoint the athersclerotic building blocks were removed ( meat, dairy oil) and the function of the endothelium was restored. Try this and see what happens.

Hey thanks for the reply , it has made me feel better since u say it's not really really high, I have had sleepless nights worrying about it, checking my presure half way through the night. I am on amias now but nothing changed infact it got worse 165-175/95-107 .i find it interesting that u told me about taking two or even three different sorted of bp medicines so I tried it for the last two days, amias plus my old rampril and my presure came right down to 135/87-93 .i have an appointment with my doctor where I will discuss this...think he should have told about that but still I am glad I found that info thanks to you.
Thanks

Hello.

First, are you sure you are measuring your blood pressure correctly? If you are exercising that much, it may be that you have large arms, and if you are using a normal sized blood pressure cuff, your readings will be falsely high. A funny example is my dad, when he is using the small cuff, he is in the 160s systolic, but down to 130-140 systolic when using the correct one.

However, some people can have hypertension even if doing everything right, exercising and eating healthy. Often, two or three different sorts of BP medicine is necessary to normalize the pressure. Your blood pressure is not extremely high but follow up with your doctor on a regular basis.
