Cholestoral Medicine

My husband is 75 years old.   He has had high Cholestoral for years and been treating it with Simvastin.  He is currently taking 5 mg a day.  He has had 2 stents, a baloon and does have some blockage in 2 smaller veins in the lower part of the heart.  He also deals with Afib all of the time.  He did weight 285 but is down to 224 because of a thyroid problem.  Due to the weight loss his cholestoral is less than 100.  Could he quit taking the cholestoral medicine?  His medical doctor says he hates to take him off of it because of the previous heart problems.  Alic464

Thnk you for taking the time to answer.  It is his total reading that is just under 100.  He has continued with the 5mg as prescribed.

Because of your husband’s history of coronary artery disease, it might be advisable for him to continue with the Simvastatin. Drugs like Simvastatin reduce cholesterol levels but are also thought to have extra beneficial effects – for example reducing inflammation and improving the way the lining of the heart blood vessels work. Your husband’s doctor will continue to monitor his cholesterol levels. It will also be important for your husband to adhere a heart healthy lifestyle which includes trying to achieve a healthy body weight, adhering to a low fat diet and getting regular aerobic exercise as best able.
