Correlation between high calcium levels and heart attack

Hello:
I suffered a mild heart attack in October 2010. Had a heart catherization and there was no blockage present.  Had a deep vein scan done on my legs and it was negative.  On the day of my heart attack, my calcium levels were at 11.3.  Although my levels have been high for the last two or three years (10.3 to 10.7), they were never above 11.0.  My most recent tests indicate that my levels are at 10.7.  Is there any correlation between high calcium levels and heart attacks?  Could the high calcium levels have caused a muscle spasm which, in turn, released a blood clot in my left ventricle causing the heart attack?  Thank you.

I do not think are any real correlations between hypercalcemia at the level you are describing and heart attacks.  We do sometimes see arrhythmias of the heart in patients with hypocalcemic (low calcium) and could possibly see an arrythmias (abnormal heart rhythm) in a patient with hypercalcemia but I think this would be at a higher level such as 14-15 or so.  If they think the heart attack was possibly related to coronary vasospasm, I think it just may be a coincidence that you also have hypercalcemic.  By the way, has this been worked up further? Do you have hyperparathyroidism or why is your calcium elevated??

Thank you so much for your response.  The PTH test came back negative (PTH was 19.0), but my Vitamin D level was somewhat low (27).  The doctor said the low Vitamin D could be the cause of the hypercalcemia and started me on Vitamin D.  I go back for blood work in a month to see if it helps.  My only concern is that some of the websites say that any elevation in calcium levels is not normal (regardless of the PTH level) and the parathyroid should be checked further by an endrocronologist.  What do you think?
