Dr please answer my question!

Hi I forgot to ask something last time.

I was just diagnosed with shunting ASD but needs more evaluation. but wanted to ask the following question:

When my pressure rises I seem to get pain and pressure in my neck veins, they throb with my heart beat.  I get this with exercise too when my heart rate speeds up I guess.
Could this be related to the ASDs or heart pressures in any way?

Thanks for answering
Jo
Thanks x

As Jon states this forum provides infromation based on experience not training. To give you perspective and possibly an understanding what could be happening.  ASD (hole in the septum) shunting is the passage of blood between the upper chambers of the heart and is usually due to greater intra left ventricle pressure than the right side so blood (oxygenated) passes abnormally to the right side and lost to normal circulation and is recycled again to the lungs and back to the left side.  If mild there may not be problem, but if shunting is significant there can be a reduction of blood pumped with each heartbeat causing a much faster heart rate to meet the blood/oxygen demand that would be met if there wasn't shunting  Worst case scenario..

Sometimes when there is a right side heart problem the right side can have a higher  intra right side pressue causing bi-directional shunting.  This condition passes blood (unfiltered by the lungs) to the left side and this condition runs the risk of blood clots getting to the heart and arteries.

Does your doctor consider the ASD to be of significance?
