I have chest pains

I had to do up to 8 laps in the pool for my lifeguard training yesterday. After only doing 3 laps, I started feeling dizzy..my chest starting feeling like someone was grabbing on to it tightly, and hyperventilating. I'm pulled out of the pool by 2 of my instructors, and all I remember is waking up w/ an oxygen mask over my face. This happened 8 days before at my work and I was'nt even hardly doing anything, but helping people get on the rides. Both times...I have had an attack. Where it involves pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen mask over my face. I also been coughing, but not continuously. In order to cough, I have to hold my chest and cough. So I know it's not asthma. All, I know is I'm 20 going on 21 in July and my family Doctor acts like she does'nt know whats going on. She thinks it might be anxiety, but I was'nt anxious or upset yesterday at all, until the attack happened. All, I want it Is my life back. Please if you have any Idea who I can go to or I need to know anything...I'd be grateful if I was written back. Thanks.

Bethany

Well, I went and got all the results from my Echo and Methacholine Challenge today. The doc said my heart is perfectly normal and that I do have asthma.

It's me again. Just wanted to let you know that I went and did the Methacholine Challenge Test to see if I have asthma. When I got there the nurse told me the process. She said that I would do a few breathing exercises and breathe into a tube. Then after a that I would inhale a diluted version of the methacholine and do another breathing test, that would be my practice round. She said that I would have 6 breathing rounds w/the Methacholine and then I would be done. She said that if during that time my lung functions were to drop 20% that the test would be discontined and it would be a sure sign that I have asthma. She said that the worst case scenerio would be that my lung functions would shut down completely and they would have to give me a shot to get me breathing again. That really worried me.
Anyways, I went back in the room and sat in the breathing booth and did a few exercises. Then I inhaled the diluted does of Methacholine and waited 2 minutes to let it take affect. Then I did the same breathing exercises. After I finished that was when they started the real deal. I had to inhale the Methacholine 4 times for each round. My first round with the Methacholine was fine, then my 2nd round I felt fine, but they got meout of the breathing booth and told me to sit in a chair and gave me a bronchodilator to get my functions back up. Evidentally my functions dropped 20% or more and that's why they discontinued the test. I inhaled the bronchodilator for 10 minutes then waited another 20 minutes for them to let me do one more breathing exercise. This time I didn't inhale anything, they just wanted to check to  make sure I was ok before they let me go. There were 6 rounds of testing that I was supposed to have done, but I only made it to the 2nd round. I'm hoping this means I have asthma. That would be the good news out of all of this.

Well, I hope everything works out for you. I'm a nervous wreck b/c in a week I will find out my results from the Echocardiogram. I'm thinking that if it was something serious the doctor would've contacted me, but then again they can be weird at times. All this waiting is making me crazy. It's just not right that I've had to wait almost a month to find out my results. If there wasn't anything wrong then there probably is now.
Anyways, I would deffinately think about seeing a cardiologist. It's better to be on the safe side and rule out heart problems.

Good Luck:)

It's Me again!! I quit my Job Monday, it's not worth it. After the Oxygen Mask came off, all I know... I awake and is rushed to my family practioner afterwards. Weird, that I been feeling fine. No anxiety or anything. Just normal,Then all of sudden The attack comes. My Doctor said Acid Refluxm My Counselor says Anxiety. And my friends and neighbors say Asthma. Whatever it is,it's this chest thing that is starting to stress me out and give me anxety. I'll be seeing a allergist pretty soon. If they can't help I'll be 100% going to a Cardiopulmonary specialist.

Thanks,
Red angel

I feel for all of you I know that when something strange happens in the chest scary. I am 34 and have 4 kids two weeks ago I went to er I was just sitting and next thing I know the middle of my chest got so tight up into my neck, ears down my arms, they did blood work, ekg, found nothing, I smoked up untill that time I have not had a cigarette since than, a few days later did a stress test came back with a little abnormality so the doc gave me nitro incase my chest starts to hurt, well lets just say that a few days after that i call my doctor to tell him that the pain is there and has been all day he tells me take a nitro if it goes away go to er so I took nitro and went away so off the er again they do all the tests keep me over night put nitro patch on my chest but nitro would only stop it for about an hour, they give me morphine it stops it for about 4 hours, next day they release me with some protonix got to see if that works, well lets say that was 4 days ago have been taking the protonix daily but as I am sitting here discomfort still there but only now is in my arms also,  I have been to the hospital 4 times in my life the first time was in 96 and they said there was some hardening of one of my valves, I am very confused and scared and stressed, if anyone has had this happen please tell me so I don't think I am going crazy, they say there is nothing wrong and if happens again go to er well fact of the matter is if i went to er everytime this happens I would be living there....

Iam a 22 year old college student in Hammond Louisiana. Normally i do not write letters like this but i had a scare while working out earlier today. I had done a brief cardio workout on the spin bile in my gym at the university for about 30 minutes to warm up. Afterwards i went upstairs to the indoor track and ran a half a mile. Everything was fine and i began to walk back to my dormitory. WHile walking, i experienced a quick jolt in the center of my chest, somewhat to the left. It lasted about 3 seconds and never returned. What do you suppose this is and do you believe that i should follow up with a cardiologist??

Hello, I'm a 25 year old female. Every now and then I have trouble getting a good deep breath. I went to my doctor and she said it was anxiety and prescribed Paxil. That didn't help so I went to the ER one night and he said I had bronchitis. The only thing is that I was never coughing and didn't feel sick. I was getting fed up. I made myself and appointment to see a respiratory specialist. When I went they did x-rays, breathing tests, and an EKG. All of my results came back negative. The doctor told me that my heart was beating fast and that might be a sign of heart disease. He made me an appointment for a cardiologist to have an echocardiogram. I went and had that done but won't know the results until I meet back with the respiratory specialist on May 1. April 24 I have to go have a Methalcholine Challenge Test done to see if I might have asthma.
Anyways, like someone else said, you're never too young to have heart problems. I would deffinately go to a cardiologist ASAP and get the proper treatment you need.

Dear Bethany,
There are many causes of chest pain.  The one that doctors worry about the most is cardiac because it has the potential to be life-threatening.  Once this is ruled out the work-up can proceed at a more leisurely pace.

Amongst the cardiac causes of chest pain are: ischemia (due to blockages - including both stable and unstable angina and acute heart attack and coronary artery spasm), pericarditis (inflammation of the sack around the heart), myocarditis (inflammation of the heart), cardiomyopathy (heart failure) and rarer causes such as coronary artery dissection, acute rupture of the heart and valves and infections of the pericardium.

Gastrointestinal causes of chest pain include reflux (acid from the stomach washing back into the esophagus), gallstones, esophageal spasm, esophageal rupture, varicose veins of the esophagus, strictures of the esophagus, tumors of the esophagus and other less common GI problems.

Pulmonary (lung) causes include asthma, pneumonia, pulmonary embolus, pneumothorax, pleuritis and bleb rupture.

Other potential causes are aortic dissection, back and spine problems and musculoskeletal (muscle strain, rib fracture, etc.).

Psychological causes of chest pain are common and include panic attacks, anxiety, stress and mental duress.

As you can see the list of potential causes in long and may take a little bit of time to determine the precise cause.  A good Internal Medicine doctor should be able to work through the potential causes of your symptoms.
