Mitral Valve Regurgitation and Thickening

I recently had an echocardiogram that show some mitral valve regurgitation and thickening of the valve.  (I think this is what I was told.)  The echo showed no Mitral Valve Prolapse.  (I am a 37 year old female.  Other health issues are:  Hypopituitarism, GERD).

The symptoms that led to having the echo were anxiety, constant dizziness, and racing/pounding heartbeat after mild exertion.

I am seeing a cardiologist next week, and I'm trying not to freak out in the process!  Is this a concerning diagnosis?  Is there something that could help alleviate my symptoms?

Thank you!

Sherry

As mentioned above it is the quantification of the severity of mitral regurgitation that is important. If it is severe, especially if associated with symptoms or LV dysfunction it usually requires open heart surgery. If not then medical treatment is in order if at all, which may include control of blood pressure alone or with endocarditis prophylaxis.

Hi,

I'm not the doctor but maybe I can put your fears to rest. If the regurgitation and thickening are trivial or mild then it's nothing to worry about. My own echos have shown mild regurg and thickening of the MV for the past several years and my cardio never even mentions it.

Are these are the only irregularities on your echo? If so, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.   Best of luck!
