Palpitations, should I worry?

I am a 47 year old woman....Lately I've been having some palpitations on and off.. sometimes it feels like a fluttering in my throat that sort of catches my breathe...and makes me feel like I need to cough.  I had something similar a few years back and wore a holter monitor and did ekg, stress test and blood work....although the holter showed some palpitations, the doctor said nothing to be concerned about..and that my blood work, stress test and numbers are great...meaning great cholesterol and average blood pressure of 110/65.  I do have hiatal hernia and reflux...when i get these palpitations I usually do have an episode of a burp or two. I am a rather small person with BMI of 21, and am fairly fit.  I see my doctor in January.  Do you think this is anything that I should see about sooner ...or basicly, is this anything I should worry about?.

Palpitations can be related to extra heart beats (such as PVCs or PACs) but can also be related to abnormal heart rhythms (such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter). It doesn't sound like your previous Holter showed evidence of abnormal rhythm, but it might not be a bad idea to have another Holter or Event monitor if your symptoms are getting worse (more frequent, lasting longer, or more uncomfortable).

I have started a Facebook group for people with PVC's. My husband suffers from them. It's call PVC's 'Living with the Flutter.' I hope to have a large support group so people who have this don't feel as though they are the only ones.

Thanks for your response.  I decided to see the PA yesterday, she assures me it is most likely NOT my heart....and that it did seem that my reflux is out of control. Switching up my meds and I go back in a few weeks.

I'm not a doctor, but from what I've read most palpitations are benign, meaning you shouldn't stress out too much. In fact, it is my understanding that everyone has benign palpitations and that many people just don't feel them. I've had them for years, and they are disconcerting, but have never presented me with a serious problem.

All of that said, it's a good idea to get any heart-related condition diagnosed. It couldn't hurt to move your appointment up. Perhaps you could get the January appointment out of the way early and put your mind at rest.
