Please help me!

I was just diagnosed with Afib 6/25/2012. I am a 51 year old male in very good shape. No underlying conditions. Sonogram and enzyme blood work excellent.  I was on my back for 30 hours and no Sinus .  They let me walk on a portable machine and I converted right back and have been Sinus every since.  I was started on amiodarone 200 mg 4 times a day for two weeks then 2 time a day for the next 2 weeks, then down to 1 time a day.  I also take Diovan 1 time a day.  I have been scheduled for a treadmill test on 7/11/2012. I have been sick everyday. First couldn't sleep. Now my stomach is in very bad shape and I'm getting headaches.  When I try to sleep I freak out with the strange feelings.. And wake myself up.  Always think the big ones coming. Have been back to the emergency room twice. Once at the original hospital and once at a larger hospital in Pueblo, Co.  Should I have been started on Amiodarone first?  I am always sick. What can I do to help the nausea?  Feel sorry for my wife and kids watching me go through this.  PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

Hi there,

Atrial Fibrillation is an arrhythmia where the heart doesn't beat normally and you have a risk of developing blood clots.  You should actually take bloodthinners as well!  Amiodarone is the meds of choice these days as it has the least side effects, but there are a lot more that your Cardio can try until you find the one that works for you.  Amiodarone Side-effects: Gastro-ent-issues and nausea!  So you should discuss it with your Cardio once he has done the Stress ECG and try another medication for you and ask him about the bloodthinners or Asprin a day?  I use to take Ecutrin.

I was on 5 different beta-blockers and lived in South Africa at that stage and "Cordorone" was not available there.  None of the Beta blockers worked!  I tried Sotacor with Florinef (got very hypotensive from the BB), Rythmol, etc. etc.

During episodes of A-fib your heart is not pumping sufficient blood and then you will become hypotensive and the pulse rate is low due to the abnormal rhythm.

I had A-fib and SVT (your heart speeds up to 200+ while sleeping!) in 2007 and both were treated with Cardiac Ablation where Electrophysiologist (a Cardiologist that specialises in the Electric-part of the heart) does mapping and then destroys the abnormal nodes or pathways that causes A-fib and SVT's.

Once you have experienced A-fib it is hard not to worry and I can also remember how scared I was of sleeping and ended up with taking sleeping meds and Xanor... but it is only a short-term solution.

Some medication (OTC flue tabs) can cause arrthythmias and be sure to ask your Cardio for a list of "do's and don'ts"and ask if Cardiac Ablation could be an option for you.

All the best and I hope you find a solution soon :)

I feel short of breath and very freaked out.  Don't feel palpitation.
