There is a typing error in enjon's post.  All quoted dimensions for IVS should be in millimeters (mm) or shift the decimal point one position to the left for cm.

In addition to what has been stated, an enlargement of heart walls and septum(ventricular) begins to crowd out filling space and the decrease in capacity results in less blood pumped out with each stroke.  To meet the same demand for blood/oxygen, the heart works harder and can/will cause dilated carrdiomyopathy weakening contraction.  Also, enlarged septum, heart walls loses flexibility and further restricts the filling phase's capacity.

High normal is 11cm, borderline is 12mm and 14cm is still considered mildly enlarged. This is a measurement of the wall between the left and right chambers of your heart. As we age the walls will thicken as part of the aging process, they can also thicken due to underlying conditions which makes your heart work too hard, one of the main causes is high blood pressure. What was your doctor's feedback on this?
