Something to worry about?

I have recently been diagnosed with hypertensive cardiomyopathy. I was told I have mild left ventricular hypertrophy and left atrial enlargement. I am very overweight with a bmi of 41, male, 33 years old, and a smoker (trying to quit). I was put on metoprolol200 mg per day, amlodipine 10 mg, and since my high sensitivity c-reactive protein was 8.9, I was put on simvastatin 5mg. The medicine was controlling my blood pressure over the last couple of months but now it is not. I consistently run in the 150/95 range. My resting heart rate stays around 90. Is it normal for meds to just stop working, literally overnight? Should I be concerned about my risk of heart attack or stroke? Any advice is appreciated.

Also Ask the Doctor for help giving up smoking. There is a lot of help available and the stress levels from trying to quit won't help much.

Thanks Jon,
My Dr. put me on the statin because of the c-reactive protein levels. My cholesterol was okay at 150 though my good cholesterol was a little low at 36. Thanks for your input. I am going to call my dr. Friday and let him know we need to do something about the meds.

Google heart disease calculator and enter your data. Right now you have a higher than average risk for people your age, but it is not terribly high. Input those same numbers and use an age of 43 and you are a very high risk for heart disease.

You need to stop smoking, lose weight and exercise with your doctor's approval. You also need to discuss your BP meds and see if he can try another class of drug that is more effective because at stage 1 hypertension which you have, you are causing significant damage to some very major organs as well as your arteries. You are on a statin so you must also have high cholesterol.how high? Also, your CPK would indicate that your body already has chronic inflammation taking place which could be your arteries or heart muscle, you really need to take action.

Now is the time for you to take action.
