Infection following bypass surgery is a potential risk for all patients, however it is more likely to occur in those with diabetes and in those who are elderly. The infectious agent "strep" lives on our skin and in our mouth and unfortunately, the immune systems of the elderly are sometimes not up to par so to speak, which then leads to the need for antibiotic treatment and other measures to control and treat the infection.
