Temporary High Blood Pressure and Triglycerides

I normally have a great BP (120/80, 122/82, etc).  I recently went through about a 3.5 week cold virus which effected my nose, chest, abdomen, etc.  I was taking about every over the counter med there was (Tylonel Cold, Roebentussen cold and cough, Nyquil, Gas X and Musenex).  Anyway, I was about 1 day off the stuff and went to the doctors and he wanted a blood test and blood pressure.  My BP at the doctors was 140/98 and then today, it was 165/107.  What I found out today was that my bloodwork came back and my tryglercieds were at 610 which is astronomical!  I had blood work done about a year ago and everythng was perfect.

I'm taking Zocor for my cholestrol and now am going to take Niacin and Fish Oil for the tryglecerides.  So I can take care of that with a good low carb diet.

But does anyone know that will over the counter medications like the ones I mention raise your BP dramatically.  And how long does it take for the med's to get out of your system.  I was told by others that I should have had my blood work done since it was right after taking all of that and I probably still have the bug in me.

Does anyone know if this can effect my blood pressure and blood work numbers?

Its very nice of you that you want to help people, and I am very sorry that I used you as a sounding board. Hopefully when you understand better you can influence and teach the medical professionals to at least take us SERIOUS.

You're so right about that other person who said something horrible to you, and i DO understand!! Many of my posts to other people are about my personal experiences! How i got better was i had an amazing EP (who i now work for) He took the time to attend to my mental state as well.. I had an ablation, and i never looked back.. This is what worked for me, and i know it wont work for everyone else.. The other post about me wanting to know why palpitation suffers are so greatly effected by a benign condition is because i want to help!! If psychologists and psychiatrists knew better how to help people with these debilitating fears, it would help so many lives, and you're right, im sure alot of people do get blown off, because its not a physically threatening condition, but that doesnt mean its not a big mental burden to bear.. I want to help people with that and help others understand that, not try and humiliate them!

I admit I came on to strong, and I want to apologize, also that I didn't seem to know or lets say remember that collegirl also had PVC's/svt.

I've been going through this "not understanding" by doctors/therapists for decades, and when I saw the thread by college girl asking "how comes people with benign PVC's are more scared than people with real heart conditions" I just got very angry.

If you read my posts one or two will tell you how I was being humiliated, not taking seriously, scared of, making fun of my phobia by medical professionals.  Medical professionals not WANTING to understand, or lets say don't care, and then I saw the headline from collegirl also not understanding and it p...ed me off.

Collegirl since you have been through this hell why don't you tell us "how" you got over it"?

Yes I'm bitter.  Not just for the medical professionals not understanding or care about people like us with heart related phobias but also about Cardiologists saying about EKG's who spit out false heart attacks "I'm so tired of all these many false heart attacks from these now computerized EKG's, BUT we have to run a bunch of tests to make sure you didn't have a heart attack".  Instead of saying "we got in touch with the manufacturers who make these computerized EKG's, we put in complaints and hopefully they will come up what causes them to spit out false MI's or we get rid of them and go back to the old fashioned way".  But NOOO, why should they?  A bunch of tests brings in money, while people who already have a heart phobia are in suspense and anxiety to the max waiting what all these tests will show.

Collegirls asks "something must've happened in my life for me to post like that" or something like that.  Damn right it did, NOT CARING, NOT TAKING TIME, NOT WANTING TO UNDERSTAND patients with heart phobias.  Our phobias are worst than somebody with a "spider" phobia, a "snake" phobia, we can stay out of their way, but a phobia like ours is within us, in our bodies and minds.

Yet when I posted the name of books by an Australien Psychiatrist who wrote and gave speeches for people just like us, who took the time to undestand us, and cared enough to help us, it was deleted.  I understand board regulations, other sites have the same regulations.  When I told our family doctor yrs ago that these books finally got rid of 95% of my panic attacks the first thing he said "oh yeah? what book? did you find it at a yard sale?  After all if a book helps you there is no more need for meds for them to prescribe to you, and no more kick backs.  At my next visit I brought all 3 books and he would not even look at the cover.

Again, I'm sorry if I offended you.  Don't worry I'm out of here you don't need to threaten me.  As I see the one who told me 3 yrs ago that "my next exercise might be my last" is back with a number next to his old name.  People like him who come on here and scare some people THAT is what you should be concerned about.  At other sites he would be banned permanently.

The reason they are putting Coricidin behind the counter is because Teenager are getting high on mega doses of Coricidin, same for Sudafed.  They even have a name for the "coricidin high" but I can't remember it right now.  The other reason may very well be because of the interacton with anti depressants, but I saw on TV more than once where "getting high on Coricidin by Teenagers" was mentioned.

BTW, at the Pharmacy in our neighborhood its still sitting on the shelve. Makes you wonder how serious this pharmacy is taking these warnings.

Please talk to your doctor, or the pharm. before switching any medication due to advice you get from the internet., even over the counter drugs can have serious side effects. coricidin is usually only mentioned for people with heart issues because it can have some pretty serious drug interactions with other common drugs (such as antidepressents)Which is why they are now putting it behind the counter. Always talk to your doc first :) Every medication has its risks and benefits, better to let a health professional decide whats best for ya :) Mention to your doc that you had taken a decongestant and you feel thats the reason for the high bp..If they suggest coricidin, Go for it :) If not, then im sure regular decongestant is fine for you

I would like to thank both of you advice and information. It helps a lot.  As Barbarella said, this morning, I feel like my BP is going down.  I feel much better this morning and probably will by the end of the weekend.  I have to admit that I was hitting the cold med's hard to try to knock it out of me and I may have went overboard.  But like I said before, once I had a physical and had a 122/80 BP and then it shot up, I knew something was wrong.

Now I just have to get my tryglercydes down and I will be good to go.  Off to the gym and a good diet (no more fired foods).

Thanks you guys, it really means a lot to me that you took the time out to respond.

Your post above your last post stated "it should be save to take over the counter drugs if you do not have high blood pressure or heart diseases"

Now all of a sudden you say to "go talk to your doctor" which is good advise.  You also say "you should not take advise over the internet" didn't YOU give adise (see above) "if no high BP or heart issue you can take over the counter drugs"???.  Well, what is it???.  Or is it take only advise from "collegirl"???

Flip flopping and contradictions doesn't help anybody.  ALL over the counter drugs can interact including Coricidin, but not everybody goes to the doc because of a cold.  So why take a chance with high BP taking Nyquil (if the person experienced a rise in BP) when you can take something which will not effect your BP.

Of course going to the doctor is always best, but not everybody goes there because of a cold I know I don't.

The doctor told my husband that these over the counter meds can stay in your system for 5 days after you stop taking them.  His BP was going down very slow for 3 days, and then finally back to normal.

Some people with normal blood pressure get a severe spike when taking over the counter meds, some people get nervous/anxiety, some people get a fast heart rate and some people feel nothing.

Coricidin is for people with High Blood Pressure, BUT if your normal Blood Pressure goes up when taking these over the counter cold medicines then its wise to take one which does not raise your BP as in Coricidin.

Why take a chance if there are cold meds out there who wont raise your BP.

I found it on Google what the kids call a "Coricidin High" see below!

Kids call it "skittling" because Coricidin HBP, a popular over-the-counter cold medication, looks like candy.

barberella.. Why on earth are you being so confrontational?? Its never good to advise someone to take medication, which is why I stated to talk to the physician first and foremost.. Im not contradicting myself at all.. There are specific reasons ( some of as ive listed above) why coricidin isnt recommended for everyone.. Otherwise, you're right, who wouldnt?? But of course, there are reasons.. By saying that over the counter medications isnt contradictive to people with normal bp isnt advice, its a medical fact :) Ide never advise anyone to take any medication, including over the counter, without talking to a doctor first, which is the only reason i jumped in there :) please try and be a little more attentive and tolerant in the future :) lets all leave the medication advise to the docs.

Unless the advise comes from you of course. Unlike you I don't claim to know it all.  You think you run this site just because you had a few college courses or are going to college.  Read your post again.  Yes, you said see a doctor but at the same time you said "it should be no problem for you" (over the counter meds)"

I simply answer questions, give advise what helped me and my husband. You are not a doctor, so don't pretend like you are one.

Read over your posts on another thread i.e. twice you mentioned "I don't know how much you know about EKG's" but of course YOU do.  If you know so much why don't you open your own practice?  You have an awful lot of time on your hands, and an awful lot of knowledge, you think.

You want to know why so many people are bothered by their PVC's as you call it "obsession".  Nothing wrong with that, but obviously you never had any PVC's or a bad case of it, if you did, you would understand people like us a lot better and not ask stupid questions.  I thought this was a message board for people to exchange their experiences about these PVC's and other heart issues not people being surprised "why" we react the way we do, and maybe use us for their college paper.  Tell the Shrinks and Psychologists/Therapists and doctors to take us more seriously since you claimed that "doctors on this forum also don't understand".  Maybe at their next conference they can suggest for Psychologist/Psychiatrist to try to find out "why" we are the way we are so they can fill in the doctors/cardiologists so they don't have to be "surprised".  But if a shrink tells a patient "stop going to doctors and hospital" looks like he needs a shrink himself. I don't have the money or the Insurance allowing me to "shrink shop" till I found the one who gives me the time he gets paid from the Insurance company, and not have the prescription pad and ink pen ready writing a prescription without even looking at me or barely listening to me.

If I have a medical question I try to log on the site where a REAL Cardiologist can answer my questions, not somebody pretending to know it all, to give advise who never themselves went through something like that.

I had enough of this board 3 yrs ago when a certain "know it all" tried to tell me that "my next exercise might be my last", I went to other boards where people with attitudes like that get kicked off immediately.  I came back to give it one more chance but saw that this person was still posting his ****, yeah it looks like he is FINALLY gone, but now we have to deal with people who go on a message board to "share their experiences with heart conditions" but instead don't even experience them themselves, but cannot understand "why" we are the way we are.

It doesn't matter what we say, most shrinks cannot even help us, because most of the medical professionals out there don't care.  After all if there was a cure, there would be no more need for all these tests, all these meds, would they?

Yes our brains are "fascinating" to learn about if we would only get this "fascinating understanding".

But of course if you are a drug addict or alcoholic and walk in any clinic and tell them "I want to get clean please help me" the red carpet is being rolled out for you, and you get all the help whether you have money, no money, Insurance or no Insurance.  I'm NOT saying these people don't deserve to get help, but people like us are going through our own hell and all we ask for is some understanding and not being brushed off as hypercondreac nut cases.  Unless of course a doctor himself or his wife went through something like what we are going through THEN there is ALL the understanding.  Or some movie star or politician, THEN it rings a bell.

WOW.. That was QUITE the outburst!! I never EVER claimed to know it all, if you where familiar with my posts at all, i frequently claim to not be more qualified than the average person :) I dont know what in your background makes you believe it is acceptable to talk to people like that, but frankly that kind of bad attitude is appauling.

If you;de like to read a little more carefully, everything i said was preceeded by "Talk to you doctor FIRST".. I know better than to give out any kind of medical advice.. I appologize that you dont.. Also, please do not make any assumptions about my education.. I have taken well mroe than a "a few" college courses..

I personally had a HORRIBLE experience with SVT and pvc's.. But fortunatly i got help for that and can look back and see how obssessive and outrageous my personal thoughts where..

On that other thread, i was just trying to help you understand because you seemed to be confused about ekg's, if you took the fact that i wasnt understanding what your point was as insulting, thats not really my problem.

Not sure whats happend to you in your life that makes you lash out like this, but its really unnaccptable and against the terms of use of this site.. If you;de like to stay involved, please learn to manage your behavior appropriatly...

I strongly suggest you dont ever misquote me or anything i say again.. The only advice i gave on this thread, was to speak to a doctor.. Im sorry if you didnt read close enough to understand that.... Ive recieved nothing put positive feedback from the other members on this site, and i truely enjoy sharing my personal experiences with others  to help them through dark times.. Im sorry you dont enjoy that as much as being rude.

Yes, they definatly can..Look up the half-life of the medications you mentioned and it will give you a better idea of how long these could have a raising effect on your blood pressure, or call the manufactorer.. Do you have a history of heart problems or high blood pressure? If not, check with your doctor, but it shouldnt be a problem for you to continue taking normal over the counter meds... Generally you only need to take Coricidin if you have some kind of heart history, like tachycardia, arrhythmia or high blood pressure, as a few examples..

Barbarella,

Thank you so much for the quick comment.  Do you know how long the med's stay in your system. The main one I noticed was anthes....something or other but its in every cold med and they say dont' take too much of it.  Right now, I'm ok with the cold virus, I think I have it kicked.  But I got my blood work numbers back today and seeing my tryglercides up so high and I can feel my BP up, I was wondering how long it stays in my system so I can go back and give blood work.

My BP shot up like crazy, even though its been about 3 days since I haven't taken anything so that's why I was wondering if that could have caused the spike and how long it stays.  Like I said, I was in for a physical, right when the cold started and my BP was 122/80.  Since then, I had it read twice (while taking the cold meds) and it was 140/98 and 165/107.  My anxiety was up as well when I heard this news so that can play a factor.

I'm looking to see when it will drop again.

YES, Nyquil for example can raise your BP tremendously.  My husband took Nyqil and on the second day it made his BP shoot up from his average of 128/75 to 197/120.  Our doctor told him to NEVER, ever take Nyquil or any over the counter decongestants again.

"Coricidin" is a decongestant which will not raise your BP.  You can also ask any pharmacist he/she will tell you what decongestants/cold meds will not raise your BP.
