Trivial Mitral Regurgitation

What is the meaning of trivial mitral regurgitation?
What is the meaning of Mosaic color flow display noted across the mitral valve during systole? <-- is this a significant result? i mean is this alarming for a 2d echo result?... tenx!

No, it is not a reason for concern.
Moderate and severe regurgitation require monitoring (1x/year, 2x/year) to check for increase of leakage or compensation of the heart, but trivial (also called trace) and mild do not require monitoring.

My cardiologist told me 30 percent  of people have mild leakage

I just had a echo done, showed trace aortic regurgitation, physiologic tricuspid valve regurgitation, I think same or less then trace. Also showed I had mild Mitral valve prolapse and Mild mitral valve regurgitation. I am 52 years old no health problems. Had some minor aches in chest but docters does not think it is related to Heart. Also showed mild right ventricular dilatation 2.97. I have excellent HDL of 100 and Blood Pressure good can go over 140/90 some times but most of the time a lot lower. I am told to come back in one year for another echo. How common is the Mild regurgitation? Anything to worry about?

The mitral valve is the valve on the left side of the heart that separates the left atrium from the left ventricle.  In diastole, this valve opens in order to allow blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle.  In systole, this valve closes so that when the left ventricle ejects blood out into the rest of the body, blood is prevented from flowing back into the left atrium.  Mitral regurgitation means there is abnormal flow from the left ventricle into the left atrium during systole.  Trivial MR is a common condition which just means there is a very small amount of blood seen going back into the left atrium during systole.  This is detected by color flow doppler on an echocardiogram and is portrayed by colors.  Trivial MR is a benign condition and there is nothing to be concerned about.  Trivial MR rarely leads to worsening MR.

There are 4 valves in the heart, 2 on the left side and 2 on the right side because the heart is 2 pumps in one unit. One valve in the left side and one valve in the right side (between the Atrium chambers and Ventricles chambers) have a tiny leak, lettering blood flow backwards. The leak is so small it is not of any concern and is very common.

Is trivial to mild regurgitation of any concern?

my mother recently had a 2d,m-mode,color flow and spectral doppler
echocardiographic report done, and she shows a trivial mitral regurgitation present and a tricuspid trivial regurgitation present can anyone please explain this to me please!   concerned. thanks.

QUOTE: is trivial mitrat regurgitation associated with dizziness?

>>>>>Trivial mitral valve leakage (regurgitation) has no symptoms and is considered medically insignficant...no problems, almost always will not progress....

Dizziness may be attributed broadly to a number of things. Sometimes, doctors find no specific cause, but dangerous causes always need to be excluded, for example:
High blood pressure, usually extremely high, causing damage to the brain, low blood pressure, disorders that cause anemia to adverse reactions to medications

If the heart is asscoiated with the symptom, it can be a heart attack, arrhythmia (irregular heart rhythms), heart rate too fast, heart rate too slow. Weakened, aged, or diseased heart muscle, toxins or drugs affecting the rate or force of the heart.  Worst case scenarios.

Hope this helps, and thanks for the question.  If you have any followup questions, you are welcome to ask.  take care.

QUOTE by ed:"My source is virtually every site containing info regarding MVP and has text endorsed by Doctors".
You should be ashamed to state 70% of the global population of adults have mild MVR.  Please show just one source (site) that shows a prevalence rate of 70% of adults with mild MVR.

The following are some of the reasons why there is no available statistics for mild MVR.
Global or world -wide statistics lack country-specific information regarding mild MVR so it is not possible to collate data!!.  If data of mild MVR is reported from USA sources, it would be unknown if MVR would have a much higher prevalence worldwide, especially in developing countries, than in industrialized nations like the USA.  No data available.

Problems with prevalence data are unable to measure the number of people affected by mild MVR condition at any given time. Many with mild MVR are not reported.

I could write a chapter why global mild MVR statistics are unreliable even if it were available which it is not possible,  I will leave it at that!:)

"So to say "70% of adults, not population" is confusing and meaningless."

It's perfectly clear and meaningful to me. It says anyone over 18. Nothing confusing about that to me.

"The population for a statistical sample can be the entire country's inhabitants, adults in a particular country, adults in the universe, etc, etc.  So is the adult population of which you refer,  is it the universe, a country, a particular group within a community, Mars, the moon? What is your source for this high percentage?"

Adults on the planet Earth, unless of course you believe there is life on the Moon or Mars?

My source is virtually every site containing info regarding MVP and has text endorsed by Doctors.

For clarity, adults IS a POPULATION in a satistical analysis.  Population's meaning statistically is an entire set or items from which a sample is drawn.  So to say "70% of adults, not population" is confusing and meaningless.

Actually, I meant to say 70% of adults, not population. This is still very common. I am not aware of what studies were done to establish this percentage but I assume it's because it has been determined as a virtual normal condition of the heart. As long as the condition is monitored to ensure it doesn't progress too much, then it doesn't impose any restrictions on day to day activities.

thanks, that's what I thought

Ed; is there some research that shows that up to 70% of the worlds population with this problem?

Trivial, mild, trace, slight are medically insignificant (there may be other adjectives), and mild-moderate, moderate-severe, and severe is how I have always seen the characterizations.  Also, I have seen MVR given numerical values of 1 to 4.   I have moderate to severe MVR.

what's the difference between trivial and trace MVP? is it then mild, moderate and severe or are there other criteria?

The doppler software that is part of an echocardiogram are colors displayed on the flow map image on the echo screen.  For instance red is by convention the forward movement
of blood as it passes through the heart.  And the color blue is the abnormal backward flow of blood.

The mitral regurgitation is an abnormal jet and comprises a MOSAIC (both red and blue)of varying colors.  The size of the jet and the direction are the parameters used to judge the severity.  You have been diagnosed with trivial backward movement of blood through the mitral valve, and that is almost always considered medically insignificant. If and when MVR is dx'd as moderate to severe, then the condition begins to have some significance.

You basically have a very mild leak in your mitral valve which makes you one of the 70% of the worlds population with this problem. However, it isn't really a problem because the leakage is so small. The mitral valve is in the left side of the heart separating the upper and lower chambers. When the lower chamber squeezes to push blood out into the body, the mitral valve should be tightly shut to prevent blood returning back into the upper chamber (where it came from). You basically have a tiny leak and lose a small amount of blood back into the upper chamber. It really is nothing to worry about.
