Withdrawl Symtoms?

I am weaning off Toprol for High Blood Pressure. Last week was first week of 1/2 dose ( down to 25mg). I felt much better all week and even starting eating, less dizzy etc. Yesterday was first day of every other day, I did not take toprol 1.2 dose and was fine during the day. At night I starting getting jittery and nervous. I did not sleep hardly all night. It could be many things, like PMS ( never had it this bad, anxiety from tapering off (hubby says I am reading too much on this) or Toprol Withdrawl symtoms maybe? I took the 1/2 dose this morning, not sure what will happen.
Anyone every had this happen?  I did take the 1/2 dose this morning as I was directed by Dr, but still feel jittery.

Hi Heartbeat

I did feel much better from the 50 to 25, almost normal. It was when I went to every other day.  Not sure what is going on, but can't wait to get off.  I have found a few other people who had some " withdrawl" side effects, like sue from this board.  You might have better adaptability.  Also since I lost a lot of weight and my BP went lower, that might be a big part of the problem.

Thanks so much Sue I really appreciate your information, as not too many people have this.  I called my Dr and they did not think I should have any side effects.  I think that everybody adapts differently.  I am glad you told me it might take a while and I am not alone on this.  Dr said it should only be a few days, but the residual effects of lowered BP might last longer.

I have big time PMS now ( just tired, jittery, feeling off), which normally would just make me tired, but in combo with everything else I think its exaggerated.

I will probably have to go on something else for the BP, the Cardiologist said something with less side effects, but not sure yet.  He did not want to give me anything now because we won't know if the side effects are from Toprol still or from the new drug.  Said a week or two of possible higher blood pressure  while not on a med(not too high of course) would be ok unless it gets really high , like 110 on the lower number.  Told me not to panic if it goes to 90.

Are there rules about emailing each other on the forum.  I really would love to email you for more details, but not sure if that is allowed.  if so I can get you my email.

Thanks again

Hi! I had several nights of problems. The meds had caused me low blood pressure which I still had 2 weeks after stopping the meds. I had many nights where I could feel my BP dropping. Like I had said, I only took them for a couple of months, but I think it took about 4 weeks until I felt that I was free from all side effects.
Hope you feel better! Sue

Thanks sue so much.  You just don't know if normal or not.  Atleast I know I am not the only one.  The last 6 weeks have been horrible.  Started feeling better on the 1/2 dose, so still not sure what is going on.  How long did your symptoms last?  Was it just one night or  a few?  Let me know if you can.

I was traking Toprol xl and switched to Atenenol, both 25mg. I was on them for 2 months. My Dr. took me off of them cold turkey. After the second night off of them I woke up sweating, shaking, feeling jittery and anxious. I felt like I was going through withdrawl. I think everyone is different. If it is the meds. you should feel better soon.

Good luck.  Sue

I'm on Metoprolol, which is the generic form for toprol.  I don't think the "weaning off" makes you dizzy, jittery and nervous etc.  I guess you weaning off from 50 mg to 25 mg.  Even 50 mg is a very low dose, it should not affect you that much going lower. Over the past years I was up and down from 25 to 50 to 25 and I never notice any difference.

Hi,  I was on 50, being on the 25 was fine, yesterday was first day to go to every other day for 25, so it was the day to skip the dose.  Not sure if it was that or something else.  Still feel jittery today, and took the 1/2 dose this morning.  It could have been coincidence, but I was fine all week on the half dose until last night, first day of skipped dose.

That was 1/2 dose, not 1.2 dose.

Sil, thanks for the post.

Some people claim symptoms when rapidly titrated off beta blockers. The rebound exist hypothetically because the body adapts over time to the dose of the drug by changing the receptors that the drug effects.

For this reason alot of physicians will taper the dose of the drug when stopping it.  If you feel you are getting symtpoms when coming off, you could try to take an extra dose. If you feel there are other reasons for your symptoms, its probably best to just continue your taper unless the symptoms seem to be increasing or become unbearable.

good luck
