http://ndrf.org/ParoxymalAutonomicSyncope.htm  This is a good page about neurocardiogenic syncope.  When you see NCS on this forum, that is it's acronym.

I don't know what you mean by seizure like feelings in your head, but there is an autonomic seizure that can increase heart rate.

Have you had any tests done?  If it happens often maybe you can get a holter test or if it's not all that often an event monitor.

What is neurocardiogenic syncope? I have noticed that I get these brief seizure-like episodes in my head and then my heart races. The symptoms are numbness on the left side of my neck for about a half hour and a rapid heart rate. Anyone have anything like that or know what it could be?

Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker.  About the side effects, I don't know which ones you mean.  If you mean the depression, that didn't go away and when I fig'd out it was depression we cut the dose.  Then for 6 yrs. I was in a funk (mild depression, but didn't know it).  I blamed it on my health going nuts, Mom's death, then Dad's death.  Then one day I woke up and said this is not me, so we cut the atenolol back and voila, I was fine.

So, if you are talking about depression as a side effect, I don't think that will go away.  Maybe try a smaller dose.  A lot of other kinds of side effects do go away.

I don't seem to have any side effects with the verapamil. It wasn't enough to keep the tachycardia at bay.  The combo of that teeny dose of atenolol and verapamil are working fine.

Btw, I actually needed that teeny dose.  When I stopped the atenolol I started having problems, that is when we decided to try the teeny dose.

I hope that helped.

My mom has mitral valve prolapse and anxiety.  I've been told by my cardiologist that they do go hand in hand.  I'm not sure how or why.

I do know that anxiety has plagued me and caused me a number of issues.  Head issues only, to clarify, preventing me from fully enjoying my life because I was preoccupied with worry and fear.

If everything looks okay, do your best to live your life.  That sound easier said than done, and it is.  It's so important though!

Hi PlayDoh, I noticed you mentioned you had anxiety over your heart and take Effexor, but also was wanting to know why you had an ablation done?  You obviously did have something wrong then with your heart?  I'm still trying to sort my problems out.  I have a history of anxiety, it runs in our family.  I obsess over my health.  I have had pac's and pvc's for 6 years, had two previous holters that were normal, one echo that showed mild mvp with mild mr and tr, Dr.'s said totally normal.  EKG's showed normal.  But this year my anxiety attacks came back, anything, and I mean anything set my anxiety off, and my heart would race between 140-180, and started skipping really bad.  My panic would keep me in this rhythm for awhile until I could get away from everyone and sit down and do some deep breathing or lie down, and slowly it would go back down.  This has happened probably 15 times in the past year and half now.  I have never noticed it just going from 70 to 200, and then instantly back to 70, it seems to me that it started going fast and fast then bam, and then it takes awhile to go back down. Anyways, my Dr. did a 24 hour holter and it showed two brief svt episodes, once was when I was taking my horses, who got loose and putting them in a horse trailer.  I was really hot (which makes my pulse race) and upset.  The second time I had started running, but it didn't take long for my hr to get to 150, maybe 5 minutes max, and soon as it hit 150, I felt it start to skip, I got panicy, and immediately quit running and sat down.  Those were the two times they said they caught it. They also caught 58 pac's.  Other than that, it said normal 24 hour holter.  I asked my Dr. if the one interpreting the results could have mistaken my strip for Sinus Tach, and she said no, very easy to tell the difference in them.  Anyways, my pulse now is always high, whether by anxiety knowing this, or something else.  My resting rate is 80 and during the day walking around my housei s 100-130.  I am on Xanax, for a week and half now, and it seems like it only makes me sleepy, but doesn't do much with the heart rate.  My Dr. was going to send me to an Electrophysiologist at first, but then she said after consulting with either a Cardiologist or Internal Dr., they said she should try me on a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker first, and if they don't work, then send me over to a specialist.  So I'm taking Inderal, 20mg, it makes me tired and dizzy/lightheaded.  Today is day three, and it's weird because I"m only seeing a little improvement when I'm walking around, but if I'm sitting I'm seeing a big improvement.  So I don't know what to think.  I wonder if I need to try a higher dose, but then I am already tired.  I'm sure part of why I'm SO tired is the combo between the Xanax and Inderal, but I need the Xanax to keep me calmer, when I'm not on it, I can feel the anxiety inside me.  I'm sorry for the long post, I just wondered if you can relate to any of this, do you like the Effexor, and just curious what you had an ablation for?  Thank you! Michelle

What is Verapamil?  I knew it would take some time to work out the side effects, the Dr.'s office said maybe a month, but I don't know, did you give it that long?  Michelle

I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia and neurocardiogenic syncope.  I was initially put on atenolol, but it caused me to have depression.  So now I take 1/4 of the atenolol, about 6.25mg and am fine with that.  At 1/2 I still had mild depression, like a funk.  The atenolol isn't enough to control the tachy, so I take verapamil ER and I am just fine.

So, maybe if you just took a sm. dose you would be ok, too.  If it's not enough for tachy then maybe you can add something like verapamil.

I have mild MR and TR.  I just get an echo about every 5 years.  You don't need to be on any meds because of it.

I've learned how anxiety can effect my heart function, and in my case its incredible. I used to believe that I was panicking and worrying because my heart was doing abnormal things and beating hard and fast. Now I understand that it was all related to my anxiety.

Its a vicious circle, your stressed and tense and you notice your heart pounding or fluttering. Then you think "oh my god, I'm having a heart attack". Then of course you get greatly stressed and tense, which triggers your heart to beat even more abnormally faster and harder. So on and so forth, till your in the ER for hours hooked up to every monitor possible. Then they tell you theres nothing wrong medically and very little they can do. People who have never experienced a panic attack or bad Anxiety find it difficult to relate or understand, for the most part. Even though someone is a Doctor doesn't always mean they will sense and or help you relax and calm yourself.

Trust me, I've been there. Those little ativan's they give me to help me relax are as effective as children's Advil on me. I remember after my last ablation the nurse commenting to another nurse about how much sedative they gave me. "I'd be snowed" she said. lol. I was vibrating on the table during my second ablation after being given Madazolam and Valium.

I am taking Effexor XR and find them the very helpful. I would advise you to make an appointment at a local Mental health office if you are having panic attacks. I'm positive if you sought professional help with regards to your Anxiety and Panic disorder, you would find an improvement in your health and heart. Its not an easy, quick cure for any and all heart conditions by any means. I'm only speaking from my own experience, and I'm not a doctor.

Take care.

Hello Ramooo,

Believe it or not panic anxiety is associated with mitral valve prolapse.  It does not sound like you have a serious problem with your heart.  Anxiety itself sounds like it is what is limiting you.  Consider talking with your gp about talking to a counselor or consider talking medications for anxiety.  I have some patients that is has really helped.

Thanks for posting and good luck.
