Try changing your eating habits first. Eat low fat, whole grains, fruits, veggies. Eating fish especially salmon is very good for cholesterol. Do some brisk walking if possible, at least 30 to 45 min maybe 4 to 5 days a week. Start at a slow pace and maybe 15 min at first. Then gradually work up to more min and a comfortable pace. This can raise your hdl . your hdl should be 46 or higher and ldl 130 or lower. If that doesn't work then try meds.
Good luck.

I think all depend on which other risk factors you have and how far you are from good habits.

Anyway, before going on cholesterol pills, I would try to get the thyroid checked.
