I am a 26 year old female with a underactive thyroid that has just gone through a total thyroidectomy.I have learned that I had hashimotos disease but not until after my thyroid was removed. My triglycerides are 263..how can I lower that number.I am currently taking fish oil 1,000mg - they have increased my dosage from twice daily to three times daily..any other suggestions?

A couple of thoughts, first 263 are not terribly high. At that level there is still no solid evidence that ties high serum TGLs and heart disease. Also, the quickest way to lower this number is to cut out empty carbs like sugars, pastas and breads. Also, if you drink stop as the alcohol will metabolized as a sugar as well.

As far as meds, I also take Tricor which is a fenofibrate. Statins are not shown to be effective for reducing TGLs but Tricor works very well.

Hope this helps,

Jon

Have they suggested taking a statin?  My trigs are actually over 2100.  I take Tricor to keep these down.
