catherization

I'm a 40 yr. old woman and just recently had a stress test that showed a 'problem' with the front part of my heart. My doctor suggested a catherization, which I schedualed for next week.  I must say that I'm a little freaked out...no, make that totally freaked out.  I understand that this is a rather routine procedure, however, as I was reading a few of the other comments, I now have more concerns.  First of all, I'm curious the risk of heart attack and stroke.  I was told 1 in 500 for heart attack and 1 in 300 for stroke, is that right, and 1 in 1000 don't ...well, you know?  Now I'm reading that after a 'successful' procedure, there's an elevated heart rate...how common is that?  I know I may sound a bit like a worry wart, but I JUST found this out within the last 2 hours, so please bare with me.  I'm a mother to a wonderful little boy, 9, and I want to be here for him...
Any information would be helpful, thanks!!

Cardiac catheterization, when performed by a well trained operator is a very safe procedure.  In someone who is 40 years old the risk of stroke or a heart attack is extrememly small, probably less than 1 in 5000 cases.  The risk of death is about that as well.

I had a heart catheterization done on December 15th. I was nervous as well but it all went fine. The things they tell you "may" happen are scary to hear I know but if you have a good Dr who knows what they are doing you should be fine. I think once I finally agreed to the procedure the scariest part of it for me was first entering the cath lab, its a scary looking place at first glance. Once in they gave me the twilight meds and I even had the courage to watch the procedure on the monitors, something I didn't think I would be able to do at all. Afterwards my Dr used the Angio-seal in lieu of the pressure method to stop the bleeding in the femoral artery and I was able to go home after 4 hours instead of 6 to 8 hours, there was soreness at the cath site the next day so I stayed home and in bed as prescribed but I was able to gto back to work the next day since I am sitting at a desk all day.
All in all it wasn't even close to what I had expected.
