I have been on medical management for about 7 years for a heart problem. I had an enlarged heart due to stress to the heart that was pumping against high resistence. The heart enlarges to compensate, and medication is prescribed to reduce the heart's workload and often the heart will resize back to normal and pump adequately.
Medical management to reduce the burden to the heart would be medication that dilates vessels and the increased size reduces the heart's workload. If your mom had an angiogram, that would indicate there is some concern about the coronary vessels that may be narrow but not to a degree that would call for intervention, i.e. stent implant. Successful therapy should resize your mom's heart size.
Take care,
Ken

An enlarged heart requires tests to determine the underlying cause. If there is significant enlargement, that could cause heart failure, an abnormal rhythm event, and sometimes cardiac arrest.
Shortness of breath, if heart related, can indicate the enlarged heart has reduced the cardiac output. Worst case scenario. Because the doctor stated what he did can indicate it is not a serious condition....but the danger is not of immediate concern, but there should be an explanation for shortness of breath and an enlarged heart and treted.
The appropriate test would be an echocariogram. With that test the octor can evaluate heart wall size, chamber size, pumping functionality, valve structure inravalve pressures...anyone of these conditions can be the cause and should be ruled out.
Thanks for your question and of you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond. Take care,
Regards,
Ken
