hypertension information

Hi,thanks for taking time to answer this question I'm an 18yr old female, height 5'5'' weight 135lbs.
A few months back at a doctors appointment i was told my BP was high 150/100, it was re-taken a few days later and was 140/80 pulse was 120BPM, my doctor took bloods which came back normal.Over a few weeks i had a further 2 BP checks which were 145/95 and 150/95.I had an ECG which came back normal. My doctor referred me to a cardiologist, at my appointment my BP was 165/100 but i was nervous.I had an Echo,ECG,chest x-ray,blood and urine tests which all came back normal although my echo results said turbulant blood flow but valves appear to be clear and open , could you please tell me what this mean ?
The cardiologist said I may have white coat hypertension which makes sense as no-one else in my family has or has suffered with high blood pressure and i'm only 18 and all my tests have came back normal but even though I was nervous at that appointment i have not really been nervous  when getting my other BP checks , I just wanted to know if its possible to be feeling anxious withought actually 'feeling' so?
For a few weeks now I have also been ''feeling and hearing'' my heart beat which has been very strong at rest i've not mentioned this to my doctor as my echo and ecg results were fine so I was thinking its nothing to be concerned by , am I right ?
Thanyou again.

Marilyn,

To rule our hypertension or should I say "rule in" white coat, use the 24 hour ambulatory machine from a hospital (free in my case).

They fit you with it at the hospital and every 15 minutes (i recall) it goes off.  It may startle you at first but you get use to it.  It measures your entire day and night while sleeping.  You will be surprised at the results.

I sometimes take my pressure myself but since it's so low I don't much anymore.

Good luck

Hi, I agree with your comment paule..  I think the best solution for anyone who is concerned is to buy a blood pressure machine and take you blood pressure in the comfort of your own home.

I believe your suppose to take it after you've sat still for 15 minutes in a chair - and then you check it.  I have my own bp machine at home and it does the cuff pressure automatically.

I also bring my bp machine to my cardiologist office once a year to check for accuracy..  I can't see 'taking' meds without knowing for 'sure' you need to..  Of course like anyone I can't see taking meds unless you need them.   But if your BP is HIGH then you needs meds.  Of course, alot of these BP meds can have a terrible effect on your sex life !!!  Which I'm sure no one wants to have happen..

Best Wishes

Some advice and take it for what its worth...before you go and listen to Ericwithout the doctor who just plays a doctor on this site...just go to any hospital and check out a free ambulatory 24 bp machine...have the results sent to your primary care or cardiologist and trust me, its 98% certain your not hypertensive...In my late 30's my primary care physician who I like alot told me I'm hypertensive...this is after her nurse would take my pressure and record a 110 over 70, every time...when my doctor (a friend) would take it it would be 140 over 95 consistently when she took it...I suggested the 24 ambulatory cuff and she agreed (we even made a bet)

Well a week later when she got the results she paid up! I had low blood pressure!  DON'T WORRY

Geez, some people here would have an 18 y/o on 10 meds or giving them a full panic attack!  How irresponsible

Im 19 and have hypertension. I take 160 mg of Diovan and 240 mg of Cardizem. At first i was taking 80 mg of Diovan but that wasn't working so i did get checked out for secondary causes. I had a MRI w/contrast on my kidneys, and ultrasound, 24 urine test, blood work and everything was normal. I to had that forceful beat and was thinking it could be Pheocromocytoma but it wasn't found so now i have to take these 2 pills.

When i was first diagnosed with HBP back in january i was really overweight. I was 5'11 300 pounds and thought hey my blood pressure is high cause of the weight. Turns out i lost 55 pounds but only on diet. I dont get enough exercise but now i am because these 2 pills keep it from getting so high while i exercise. I hope i can lose more weight about 45-60 pounds and have more exercise in my life but if that doesnt help i would say my life is done.

SO if you smoke stop, don't drink alcohol, and watch your diet. Eat alot of Fiber, and exercise.

GOOD LUCK!

It is my opinion (and lord knows I am not a doctor) that you have Hypertension and you need medication to control it.

Hi,  At age 37 I had a heart attack - it just so happens it was 3 mos "after" my cardiologist took me 'off' my High Blood Pressure medication  !!  The same doctor who took me 'off' the birth control pill - 8 years later took me off my blood pressure medicine.  Although he had checked my BP numerous times after I got off the med and it appear within the normal range.

He did not put me back on HBP after my heart attack.  Should he have - I don't know..  But, I NO longer have that doctor anymore and I am presently being treated for HBP.   No one in my family had it - except ME..

If I had to do it again - I never should have taken the birth control pill to begin with.  Things might have been different - although I did have rheumatic fever as a baby that was never diagnosed properly..

But I'm talking about my blood pressure systolic being over 200 and distalic over 100 !!!  That's very high..  at any age..  I think the birth control pill did it to me..   Just my opinion..

Can't you come of the HBP pills now that you are off the Pill or does your pressure go up on its own now even without being on the Pill?

Hi, I don't want to be 'nosey' but my blood pressure went through the roof when I was 18 and it was from the birth control pills I took..  Of course they thought mine was white coat and continued to give me the pills..  Even though I had to go back 3 times and keep getting it checked - they still gave me the prescription.  Then one day when I had a visit with a cardiologist (no one else was available) and he was new -  he said - I want you off the birth control pills and I want you to take High Blood Pressure Pills...  My blood pressure normally 'was' running 200 something over 100 something every time I had it checked..  BTW - my old docs gave me birth control pills for 8 years with high blood pressure.  I guess they didn't think it was that important back then as I was so young..  But I don't think they knew as much back then as they do NOW...

thanks for the post.

1) turbulant blood flow but valves appear to be clear and open , could you please tell me what this mean ?

Im not sure exactly what this means. 'turbulent blood flow' is not generally used in echo terminology. If there was significant leakage of the valves this should have been specifically mentioned.

2) I just wanted to know if its possible to be feeling anxious withought actually 'feeling' so?

Definitely. However, you are still pretty young to have an elevated blood pressure. I would probably screen you for secondary causes of hypertension. It may also help to check your blood pressure at times when you are not in a doctors office with a home cuff.

3) For a few weeks now I have also been ''feeling and hearing'' my heart beat which has been very strong at rest i've not mentioned this to my doctor as my echo and ecg results were fine so I was thinking its nothing to be concerned by , am I right ?

Again, I would screen for secondary causes of hypertension. I would alos try to see if there were some lifestyle modifications that would be useful to try to help decrease your blood pressure without medication.

good luck
