my heart is racing

I am a 25 years old woman.  For the past two years I have found my heart beating up to 120 times pr. minute without me moving as much as a muscle.  This has happened in the morning, in the evening and mid day.  It does not seem to be related to my food habits or consumption of sugar.  it seems to happen any time. I sometimes get extra beats (or some are being skipped - I do not know which).  Only once did I faint but I do feel dizzy while it is happening.  Thankfully it only lasts for a few minutes.  This has not happened often but at least 10 times.  I am in a good shape, move around a lot and do not eat any more "bad food" than anyone I know.  Is this something I should worry about (and have checked out)or is there anything I can do about this.  I do not want to experience this again.

I do hope you will visit a cardiologist.  I began having the same problems when I was 20.  My pulse would jump to around 150 bpm during times I was relaxed and I did not understand what was causing it.  The first doctor I saw said "it is caffeine".  Not true.  The 2nd doctor said "it is stress".  I am a very mellow person, so also not true.  I finally found a cardiologist at a research medical school who took me seriously.  The tests were not painful.  In fact, the episodes were much worse than any test I was given.  After a series of tests on the thyroid, adrenel glands, echo test, stress test, holter monitor, and finally a 30 day monitor, the diagnosis was obvious.  I started medication and have been very thankful... I rarely have to endure the episodes.  It was worth the time and tests!

I'm 17 years old and I have Wolffe Parkison's white syndrome.  I didn't know what it was for a long time.  I would just sit there for hours with my heart racing until one day it didn't stop for 15 hours.  They sent me to the ER and that's when I found out.  They put me on 50 mg of Atenolol and reduced it down to 25 after a while.  Now I'm better than ever.  I wish the best of Luck to all of you out there!  ***@****

I am an 18 year old female who has had the same problems with the rapid heart beat and skipped/missed heart beats.  My heat rate would sometimes climb to 200 while I was being inactive and would skip several beats at a time.  When I first noticed this, I went to see a regular doctor who sent me to a cardiologist who sent me to an electrophysiologist.  The e.p. did several tests including an ultrasound and stress test.  I also wore two different heart monitors---one for a week (holter) and one for a month (king of hearts).  The King of Hearts monitor diagnosed me with a severe case of Wolffe Parkinson White Syndrome.  I had an ablation done within that next month after I was diagnosed and was back to my normal self within the next few weeks after the ablation.  That was in February and now I am feeling great.  It it so nice to be able to have a normal pulse rate that is almost 1/3 of what it was before the ablation.  I am not taking any medication now and have been told that my heart problems are gone forever!  If you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them.  I went through the exact same thing it sounds like you are going through.  It is really stressful, frustrating, and restrictive on daily life.  Please email me if I can help you in any way!  phil413_ali***@****  Best of luck to you!!

Since it has happened a number of times now, it would be worthwhile to see your doctor about it. Some simple heart monitoring should be able to discover what the cause might be. If the episodes occur infrequently, you may need to wear a monitor for a longer period of time, say 30 days, to discover what these episodes are and whether any medication would be helpful.

Why do you assume meds will not help in her case?

You sound pretty intense.  Where is your evidence that all of the things you have mentioned cause heart problems?

Who is we?  Are these the little people from your space ship.  I am not saying that all of the substances you mentioned are harmless by the ton, but lets get real.

Do you go out daily and search for roots and grubs?

We have encountered several items in foods
that effect your heart, breathing, and nervous
system. We have learned from years of trial
and error, and we are feeling ALOT better
without the previous problems.
Pay attention, alot of these make your heart
pound like its gonna explode or stop on you!
These are from our experince.

MSGs- monosodium glutamate, autolyzed yeast
extract, hydrolyzed soy, wheat,etc; proteins
(different veg. types), yeast extract.Watch for
these in chips & soups especially, but are in many
foods. Breads, ketchup & aged cheeses have
naturally occuring amounts of MSGs, which may or
may not effect you, but they effect us if we've
had to much. Bleached flour also contains forms
of it. MSGs are used as flavor enhancers, to "make"
you like the product better. Watch out for meat tenderizers
also.

Aspartame-a.k.a. Nutrasweet/Equal. This sweetner,
used in countless diet drinks and foods, gums, candy,
etc; effects your nervous system in ways you may not
realize until your heart about tears out of your chest.

Watch out for any aspartates or glutamates, unless
they are naturally occuring in foods, because the
normal ones in your body, are that:NORMAL.

Perhaps this info will help, after you realize
the drugs don't help in your specific case.

READ BEFORE YOU EAT!

A rapid heart rate and extra beats are two different things, although their cause may be from one thing.  If your resting rate is that high, your doctor will check your thyroid level and probably your blood sugar level, as well as run the standard heart tests (ekg, maybe a stress test, maybe an echocardiogram).
Many things can cause rapid rates and many things can cause extra beats (which are usually premature beats originating from the upper or lower chamber of the heart).

Good luck.

I too would see a dr.   Have you had any problems with anxiety?  That can make your heart race without any physical exertion.

I am not a doctor, but if I were to faint while I had heart palpatations I would go see a cardiologist.  Have you ever heard of a King of Hearts monitor?  I had one for 30 days and it can record these problems you are having.  Don't ignore this, go see a doctor.  Good luck!

I know how you feel.  I'm a 24yr old healthy female, and for the past couple of months, my resting heart rate has been steady at 100, sometimes 110 on a bad day.  If I'm active, it can shoot up to around 150, depending on what I'm doing.  Then sometimes, as you, I will have skipped heartbeats, or my heart will pause and then start to pound for about ten to twenty beats.  I find it getting worse.  I'm having more and more skipped heartbeats throughout the day.  I'm worried about it, but I'm almost afraid to go to the doctor.  If you come across any info, let me know.  No matter what I try, my heart won't stop racing, and I'm going out of my mind.
