Doesn't sound too uncommon to me either.  I had triple bypass, and then got 2 stents within 4 months.

I don't know how uncommon this is.   My brother's experience is very similar to your friend's.  He had a stent, then by pass, and recently another stent.  The time frame between bypass and stent was similar to what you describe.  The important thing to consider is lifestyle changes can go a long way toward preventing further heart complications.  I recommend Arthur Agatston's book, "The South Beach Heart Program"   He writes extensively about aggressive prevention techniques.
