If you are having what seems like thumps/palpitations/queezy inner feelings, it may be some arrhythmia...and based on your docs' advice, it sounds like it's not life threatening.  However, your best approach would be to go see a regular cardiologist and explain what you're feeling...again, based on your previous episodes and tests, it's probably no big thing, but if these feelings persist and really trouble you, request that the cardiologist outfit you with a Holter monitor (24hrs) or something like a King of Hearts monitor (that you could wear for a week)...these monitors will allow you to record any suspicious thumps and bumps so that the cardio will have a chance to give you a more accurate diagnosis.  Once you have a diagnosis, you have a plan of action, and your anxiety will come down...guaranteed.  Good luck!

well i just wanted to put my 2 cents in here

i just turned 18 on the 27th of january 2002

recently ive been having chest pain around my heart area and it hurts in my back and under my left arm too.  i find that i am short of breath along with the pain and when it gets really bad i almost feel like im shivering or something.  2 years ago the doctor told me that i have an irregular heartbeat and he wouldnt sign my physical to play sports so i went to a cardiologist and had an echocardiogram and a few other tests but was told not to worry about it and he signed it for me.  everything was fine up until about a week ago.

anyway i went to the emergency room for the first time in my life on the 6th.  it really frightens me. they said everything is ok but to check with my regular doctor.  so i did that.  nothing could be determined.  now i have another echocardiogram scheduled sometime within the next couple weeks i forgot when.  i hope its nothing that i need surgery for.  i really hope its not life threatening.

It's a common occurrence in these posts...someone with a problem that they consider extremely serious, who tries to put it all together in a limited number of letters, in a way that captures the essence of the problem...with the hopes that the intern on the other end (who will likely spend seconds thinking about it) can divine the essential issues involved, and produce an answer that is both to the point and avoids a lawsuit. It;s a lot to ask for.

Settle for what you get.  The best you can hope for is a lead...something that gives you the encouragement to go to a specialist and seek out a one-on-one discourse with someone you can trust.  Don't blame the Web system on a cut-and-paste response...what would you do?

I have had similar issues with the responses herein.  They are necessarily limited in the detail they can provide.  I have made no decisions based on anything I have read here.  These are realistic expectations...trust your personal doc (or second opinion) and go with it.

Would you want -YOUR- Doctor to diagnose -YOU- over the internet?? (I'll give you a second to consider this statement;...3...2...1)

I didn't think so!

I read the Doctors response immediately and regognized it as a cut and paste many times over. I think the attack on the young guy who posted was totally uncalled for. Yes we should be very thankful to the Doctors who take their time to reply on this forum but of course it is also an ad for their clinic. On the other hand it is also very frustrating to actually make it to post a question and then receive a very generic answer.

Hank:

Charlie555 rude behavior seems be expected from a 21 year old in today's permissive society?

When I was 21 I had been back from the "Asian Vacation" [that means Vietnam Charlie555] for about a year (2 tours there).

Charlie555, DON'T take things so PERSONALLY! This is NOT UUNET Newsgroups where one is trying to "troll" you! Your -neck- thing is most likely do to your "controling personallity" (or lack there of; of -ANY- control in your life)

This is NOT "Mickey D's" where one may get a "FAST" fix!  This is REAL LIFE, where one must defer to those that, just, may be able to help!

However; I don't blame you Charlie555 for your lack of "comprehention" of writen material....I blame it on today's public schools! [there does that make you feel better that someone other than you should shoulder the blame?]

Maybe it was you who wasnt complete in your attention cahoughes, since I read all the other messages about chest tightness before I posted...there is another question that was answered with the same exact message minus the "dear charles", i do appreciate a free answer however. You ought to have kept your short sighted condescending answer to yourself-since you are obviously ignorant. I posted because i dont know whats causing my symptoms and it should not be up to me to "infer" what the doc means-it should be clear. Even in your pointless post, you failed to mentition which of the possible causes mentitioned by the doc could cause neck pain. Thanks for nothing, cahoughes

The doctors who answer questions here take time out of their busy days to provide this service and do not use "cut and paste" responses.  I read your question and the doctor's response very carefully and I think the answer was very thorough.  You mentioned the neck pain only once in passing.  You followed that up by saying that "The pain is there usually only around my heart".  I think the doctor was correct in focusing on the possible cardiac causes of your problem and not addressing the neck pain specifically in light of the way you presented the information.  If you read the response carefully, you can see that some of the causes of pain the doctor listed would apply to neck pain as well as chest pain, particularly the following paragraphs:

Other potential causes are aortic dissection, back and spine problems and musculoskeletal (muscle strain, rib fracture, etc.).
Psychological causes of chest pain are common and include panic attacks, anxiety, stress and mental duress.

Dear Charlie,

There are many causes of chest pain.  The one that doctors worry about the most is cardiac because it has the potential to be life-threatening.  Once this is ruled out the work-up can proceed at a more leisurely pace.

Amongst the cardiac causes of chest pain are: ischemia (due to blockages - including both stable and unstable angina and acute heart attack and coronary artery spasm), pericarditis (inflammation of the sack around the heart), myocarditis (inflammation of the heart), cardiomyopathy (heart failure) and rarer causes such as coronary artery dissection, acute rupture of the heart and valves and infections of the pericardium.

Gastrointestinal causes of chest pain include reflux (acid from the stomach washing back into the esophagus), gallstones, esophageal spasm, esophageal rupture, varicose veins of the esophagus, strictures of the esophagus, tumors of the esophagus and other less common GI problems.

Pulmonary (lung) causes include pneumonia, pulmonary embolus, pneumothorax, pleuritis and bleb rupture.

Other potential causes are aortic dissection, back and spine problems and musculoskeletal (muscle strain, rib fracture, etc.).

Psychological causes of chest pain are common and include panic attacks, anxiety, stress and mental duress.

As you can see the list of potential causes in long and may take a little bit of time to determine the precise cause.  A good Internal Medicine doctor should be able to work through the potential causes of your symptoms.

A cut and paste answer...very accurate about my case, but it would have been nice to speculate about the pain in my neck as well, since i DID mentition it. Obviously not all the things for chest pain would apply to the simultaneous neck pain. Thanks for the info you gave me...

Iwent for echo last spring for similar chest tightness - everything normal but appears I have developed asthma!  Bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids have made a world of difference for me.  Exercise tolerance great and no more shortness of breath.  See your internist and ask about this possibility.
