supraventricular tachycardia

last week I was sort of diagnosed with svt and am on cardizem 240mg, I still get heart palps though, and I'm afraid that I could have something more serious..I've had an echo done a year ago, that was negative, my primary care dr does,nt think I need a cardiologist at this point, also I'm on 10mg of paxil 1 x a day,
could paxil aggravate my symptoms? Is svt dangerous at all? I have 5 kids, 2 are still real little and I'm only 39, I'm scared that something is going to happen

Dear rachel,

I'm not sure what you mean by 'sort of diagnosed'.  Was the doctor able to get a recording of the heart rhythm during one of the episodes with either a Holter monitor or loop recorded?  This is key because there are many different types of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and even ventricular tachycardia (VT) that can cause palpitations.  The treatment will vary depending on what type of arrhythmia was found.  If however the diagnosis has been made based only on symptoms with no recording then I think you need to get a second opinion.  An event recorder is the best test to capture recordings of infrequent palpitations.  The good news is that for the most part SVTs are benign and not life threatening.  However, the diagnosis of exactly what is causing the palpitations should first be made.
