For some vessel anatomy of the leg: Femoral artery is large artery that starts in the lower abdomen and goes down into the thigh. After giving off other branches, the femoral artery goes behind the knee and becomes the popliteal artery.

The venous counterpart of the femoral artery is the femoral vein. It takes essentially the same course as the femoral artery but transports blood in the opposite direction toward the heart. Vessel returns blood to be oxygenated in the lungs, and artery is oxygenated blood to be distributed to the system.

The worst that could happen is a stent implant to open a narrow or closed leg vessel that is causing pain.

Q:"This is wat I mean to ask sorry......Can this thickening in the formal vessel lead to heart disease? thank keith"

A: There is evidence that high blood pressure can thicken the femoral vessel.  And high blood pressure can damage coronary arteries and if the hbp is not controlled it can lead to CAD.  CAD can lead to heart disease.

Yes, there is a major difference.  Narrowed vessels in the leg can cause pain, etc. Coronary artery blockage  left untreated can cause heart failure, but usually there are symptoms such as chest pain (most frequent complaint), shortness of breath, fatigue, etc. and treatment is available for the symptoms.

Q: "My doctor just told me stop smoking and eat rght dont worry but its easy said than done im only 36 ..........whats the worst thng could happen 2 me if I didnt watch it????"

A: The risk for coronary artery disease increases for smoking, poor diet and no exercise.  Coronary artery disease is the accumulation of plague within the arteries, and if serious there could/would be chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, etc.  If CAD is not successfully treated there can/will cause heart failure. That happened to me .

QUOTE: "Can I have a heart attack??? this is really scaring me does this take years??/ I have it in the leg does it mean the heart to??? wallthickening means that i have a blockage"

Recent studies that have done autopsies on young military individuals as a casuality of the war have shown there is some degree of coronary artery disease for younger individuals.  It is a slow process and the harmful effects may or may not ever be a problem.  Thickening vessel doesn't mean blocking... The femoral vessel is not an artery and vessels return blood to the heart to be oxygenated and arteries distribute oxygenated blood from the lungs.

You should talk to your doctor to be assured you are not overly vulnerable to a heart attack!  I don't have your medical history nor access to your medical history and treatment, etc. and  I can only give definitions and some etiology to the conditions you cite, and how, how not it applies to you is beyond the scope of any general definitions and expected results.  Actually, what is discussed is meant to give some insight for better communication with your doctor if you have concerns.

QUOTE: "I meant to say wall thickness means build up from cholestral ?? "

Yes, and leg pain develops because there is a narrowing or blockage in the main artery (femoral).  Over the years cholesterol and calcium build up inside the arteries. This occurs much earlier in people who smoke and those who have diabetes or high levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Vessel wall thickness indicates the vessels have a smaller diameter for blood to pass through.  The smaller diameter increases pressure within the vessel and if the vessel walls are weak there could develop varicose veins (bulging of a section of a vessel).
Varicose veins are prone to developing superficial thrombophlebitis, which is a blood clot along with inflammation of a segment of vein.

•Blood clots in the superficial veins are easy to detect and troublesome but are usually harmless. •You may feel an area of tenderness and pain in the varicose vein, along with redness and swelling. Sometimes such areas can represent infection within the vein, so it is a good idea to visit your health care provider if you should develop any of these symptoms.

Hope this helps.  Take care.

Wat does wall thickening visualized in the femoral vein and pop;iteal vein mean?? this is wat im concerned????

There is no evidence of clots (thrombosis), but if there were blood clots the risk of a heart attack or stroke would be probable.  You shouldn't be concerned.
