worried about my heart.....

hi, i wonder if someone here could help me?

im 25 year old male.
regular height/shape/size.

recently, for a month or so i guess, ill breath in and get a sharp pain which feels like its from my heart. left side of chest, under ribcage.
it tends to happen after ive woken up and am stretching, or sitting still for a while.

anyway, ill breath in and it feels like something will burst. so i have to stop and breath in veeerrryyy slowly. and then normally, after ive inhaled slowly without pain, i can breath again normally, until the next time.

but this is happening 3 or 4 times a day now, and its a little worrying.
if anyone could let me know what it could potentially be, i'd appreciate it. thanks.

i am a smoker, btw.

Gary,

First and foremost I would recommend consultation with your physician to fully evaluate your condition for proper diagnosis and treatment.  There are several rather benign causes for the pain and discomfort you experience such as inflammation of the chest wall (costachondritis) or neuromuscular stress that may occur for numerous reasons.  If you feel substernal pain, shortness of breath, pain the left shoulder radiating to the left arm, fainting, cold sweats or nausea on physical exertion these symptoms may be attributable to coronary artery disease.   But, play it safe and see your doctor.
