Anxiety and Irregular Heart Rhythm

I am a 21 year old female and for about 5 months now have been dealing with severe anxiety (or so I believe). I will get lightheaded and dizzy, hot, irregularly strong or fast heartbeat and feel like I am just going to pass out. I've seen multiple doctors, including a cardiologist, who tell me I'm fine and it's just normal anxiety. But every medicine I take doesn't help. I'd actually rather cure this without medicine but I just don't have the time with my 1 and a half year old son. I know a lot contributes to my anxiety, but I am just so concerned it could be something to do with my heart. Every time I just so much as feel an irregular beat I reach for my pulse to make sure it's still beating. This morning I was woken up in a panic around 5am and couldn't breathe. My heart was pounding and I became lightheaded. dizzy, and hot. I grabbed some water and walked around my house to calm down and my heart started racing probably like 130 to 140 and I did some breathing exercises to calm down. After about 5 or so minutes my heart rate was normal, but I was shaking and cold and felt sick to my stomach. I wasn't able to go back to sleep because when I laid down, I got hot and lightheaded again. If it weren't for the problems with my heart, I would have such severe anxiety. Please help! What on earth is going on??

I have the same issues. If it is of any comfort to you, there does seem to be a solution that works.  What u are experiencing is AVT attack, short for AtrialVentricalTachachardia.  Often times stress is a factor, but can also become a common misdiagnosis....  If u are still having these attacks even after trying anything for anxiety, and u still feel that nothing is working, get ur blood tested for 2 specific electrolight defeciencies......one being magnesium, and the other being potassium. Keep in mind that often times, a low potassium level is usually the reaction of having low magnesium level. Take a suppliment, starting once a day of (potassium &magnesium aspartate....  the capsule contains 250mg of each.  Make sure first, that it is approved by your doctor or primary care physician, as i am no doctor....  It does provide immediate results for me when having an attack.

Pls anyone reading this, let me know ur feedback...

I have had intermittent skipped heartbeats a few times a week for years. I tried to ignore it when all the tests that were run by cardiologist were normal. Recently had blood tests that detected a hypothyroidism condition. Started taking levothyroxine a couple of weeks ago and have felt better. Still feel palpitations every once in a while, but the intensity has decreased by 90%. Kotoronita just wanted to know how your treatment progressed. Thanks for your information.

My first bout of PVC's started when I was 21 years old.   I was working at night and I was hit with a dozen or so.   Over the years,  they've increased in occurrence and now,  at age 72,  I still have them.   Sometimes a couple every 5 minutes and sometimes two or three a minute.
Unfortunately,  I've been living my life waiting to die any moment.  In other words,  I let them ruin my life.   I'm still here after half a Century.
My Father had them and my Brother has them.   That should have told me something.   Dad lived to 84 with them.
I've never been able to make the connection as to cause.   I can tell you that limiting SALT is a huge help.   I also take Magnesium as well as CoQ10 supplements which help allot.
I'm also sure that if I were to loose my pot belly that it would help.
I exercise three times a week for two hours a day doing cardio, doing full body workouts and pumping iron under the supervision of a Personal Trainer.
I seldom have the PVC's when I'm working out.
Again,  that should tell me something.
I am taking a diuretic which I feel has contributed to the increase in the number I suffer.  I would sure like to ween myself off of them but I'm not having much luck yet.
I'm not sure what my levels of Magnesium are as it is very difficult to measure with blood tests.  All the rest of my electrolytes are pretty close to normal.
The diuretics are more than likely depleting an electrolyte I need.
Be careful if you are prescribed a beta blocker.   My Cardiologist put me on one and after just two days,  my heart rate went down to 30 beats a minute.
I darn near died.  I had no energy and kept feeling like I was going to pass out.
My GP took me off of them and then proceeded to chew me out for not going to the ER.
Anyway,  I guess the point of the post is don't let these little horrors ruin your life.

I am 24 years male, currently studying in US, I am single and new here. I am here for six months. Each day, each moment, each second my mind is occupied with my heat beat. I don't feel like doing any thing. I am having really tough time here. I don't have any one here to share this problem in this totally new country. Whenever I try to focus i get distracted with my irregular heart beat. Its time for me to think about my future but this feelings has made to so devastated. I am living in campus but time has come to live campus. I don't know what to do, where to go.

Hey there I also am 20 year old female that has been suffering severe anxiety/panic attacks too. It seemed to have come out of no where though prior to all this I had been under significant stress but it was just due to typical things in life like study/getting my license e.c.t . However I don't know exactly to this day what triggered my brain into getting into this vicious cycle that I have been battling day in and day out...I have been going through this for over 4 months. I understand when you say that you rarely feel hungry or thirsty. I have dropped significant amount of weight as I don't eat much or have drunk hardly anything for the past 4 months. I look as skinny as a rake and have numerous critical health concerns due to the intense anxiety and pain I have been suffering. I used to love food and eat all the time though I had always been a slender person to begin with, but ever since anxiety struck me I have had sore/bloated stomach that just doesn't tolerate anything I put in it. It has just put me right off food sadly and I also don't eat much cause I am afraid it wont digest properly since I know my heart rate will probably increase as I am always thinking about it and then I always get an attack when needing a bowel motion too so strange but I can't even relax to crap. So I am basically afraid to eat! Ahhh worst thing ever! I have been to many natural practitioners as well as doctors which are bloody useless. All they do is prescribe you with drugs and send you on your way. The main thing you need to try to do is try to stop fearing the fear of getting another attack ( I know easier said than done right) I even struggle with this because it just seems to swoop over me when ever I think about it.
Two vital supplements that I recommend in aiding with anxiety symptoms are B vitamin complex and Magnesium. I definitely recommend getting that for starters.
A few days ago I went to a rife center which is a place well worth going to because that is where they take a sample of your blood right then and there by doing a finger prick and then looking at that under a microscope and it is then brought up on a screen where both the patient and practitioner are able to view and discuss what's exactly going on.Your blood is alive since it is done on the spot instead of having to wait for your results from the doctor which usually takes a matter of days and in that time your blood is dead so it DOES NOT give accurate evidence on the condition your body is in. It was very informative and he told me many things that were alarming and has given me  a lot of natural supplements to start me off. Thank god I went to him because as a matter of fact my blood test results that came back from the doc stated that everything was normal O.o Far from it!!  I recommend going for a live blood test because that shows exactly what support your body needs to help balance it's way back to good health. I am on the way to recovery and in time I hope I will go back to living a normal, happy life. I hope the same to you and we can keep i touch if you like as I am willing to be here and help support you through this. Kind Regards Ambaxx

Hi, I had severe magnesium deficiency and had a whole lot more symptoms than on that list! I live in Australia so I can find magnesium products in supermarkets, chemists, and health food stores.  You need to check the label out so you aren't buying a cheap form of magnesium that isn't going to work as well as other more absorbable forms. Dr Hyman talks about this in his article Magnesium: The Most Powerful Relaxation Mineral Available...

"Stop Draining Your Body of Magnesium

• Limit coffee, colas, salt, sugar, and alcohol

• Learn how to practice active relaxation

• Check with your doctor if your medication is causing magnesium loss (many high blood pressure drugs or diuretics cause loss of magnesium)

Eat Foods High in Magnesium

Include the following in your diet as often as you can:

• Kelp, wheat bran, wheat germ, almonds, cashews, buckwheat, brazil nuts, dulse, filberts, millet, pecans, walnuts, rye, tofu, soy beans, brown rice, figs, dates, collard greens, shrimp, avocado, parsley, beans, barley, dandelion greens, and garlic

Take Magnesium Supplements

• The RDA (the minimum amount needed) for magnesium is about 300 mg a day. Most of us get far less than 200 mg.

• Some may need much more depending on their condition.

• Most people benefit from 400 to 1,000 mg a day.

• The most absorbable forms are magnesium citrate, glycinate, taurate, or aspartate, although magnesium bound to Kreb cycle chelates (malate, succinate, fumarate) are also good.

• Avoid magnesium carbonate, sulfate, gluconate, and oxide. They are poorly absorbed (and the cheapest and most common forms found in supplements).

• Side effects from too much magnesium include diarrhea, which can be avoided if you switch to magnesium glycinate.

• Most minerals are best taken as a team with other minerals in a multi-mineral formula.

• Taking a hot bath with Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) is a good way to absorb and get much needed magnesium.

• People with kidney disease or severe heart disease should take magnesium only under a doctor's supervision."

I have one question for you? Do you drink coffee? I too have felt the light headeness and the fear of passing out. Also weird heart beat like pulses in different parts of my body. I tried everything until mow. I just went 2 weeks without coffee (had to have tea because of the headaches) and the very next day I was normal. My pulse went down and I never felt dizzy. Yesterday I experimented with a few small cups of coffee due to a 16 hr shift and EVERTHING came back!. Don't know if this will help but it has helped me. Coffee apparently doesn't agree with anymore.  ruins my life. My body no longer excepts it I guess.

You may want to start your own thread to get better responses as sometimes these older threads aren't noticed.  No one can say for certain until it is actually captured but it sounds like you may have an accessory pathway svt that got active due to giving birth.  I believe when you give birth it can change the shape of the heart a bit and as such there may have been an extra muscle fiber that wasn't connecting until the baby came along.  If it is accessory pathway there is a clear way to tell in that it starts and stops in one beat.  It can feel quite manic as well compared to a fast heart beat when one exercises.  If your 24 hour monitor doesn't catch it and it won't if you don't have an episode while you are wearing it (I had mine the day before my 24 hour but not the day of).  If you don't catch it then ask to try a 30 event monitor.  This will give you a bit more time to capture it.  Until then try to manage your stress as best you can because it could be triggering more episodes than you would if you weren't stressing.  When they are able to see the initiation of the episode they will be able to tell if it is accessory pathway svt or just sinus tachycardia.  Treatments are different so they need to first distinguish which you have.  Take care and keep us posted on how it goes.

Hi ive recently had a baby almost 5 months ago & have had alot of problems since then. I.have anxiety but thought i had it under control because i hadnt felt anxious at all lately. Three days ago i went to the store & waa there for awhile and when we left i felt tired.. Out of breath and scared. I had been having left chest pain under my left breast & arm so i went to ER cause i felt horrible but my ekgs were normal.. Blood work normal and i had a chest xray and when we were waiting for results i was laying there and my body got really hot..my pulse went from 70-80 to 156 & they gave me oxygen & xanax (a low dose). They made me squeeze down like having a bowel movement & it eventually went away. I had never experienced that and i was scary and horrible. After the did a ct scan of my lungs to check maybe if i had a bloodclot but negative so they sent me home. The next morning i had another episode that lasted less them 30 seconds and i did wat the dr told me and it went away.. Saw a cardiologist & he checked my heart..did another ekg that was normal but they gave me a holter monitor (24 hours) & tomrw i go get an echo.. He said after listening to my heart he didnt hear anything abnormal but we will see. Its very scary and im stressed and worried. Lately (before episodes) ive been extremely stressed.. And my hormones are whack.. Does anyone else feel this way ..

Omg that's crazy I have the same thing . I have even gone to the ER once cause of a minor anxiety attack. & I had chest pain and S.O.B but they just gave me pills for my chest pain which helps, but not with my breathing, I wish I could stop it but idk how, and I feel like I can't even do anything because then I'll start feeling like I'm running outta breath, I get so tired easily, then I notice I can be very calm and relaxed but I feel my heart beat beating fast and it worries me. I have trouble sleeping at night because it mainly happens at night and I get ssooo scared because I don't think this is normal for a 16 year old girl. If y'all know of anything please let me know wjat I can do!!

When I was 32I was under a lot of stress due to having a severely disabled daughter.. She consumed my attention 24/7...running and going dr here whatever the day called for.. Or the crazy. Nights that we were woke by heart monitors screaming... I started having problems during the day with dizziness. Sweats... Shortness of breath and sometimes my heart feel like it was coming out if my chest... For a yr I was told I having panic attacks when I would have to go to the hospital.funny thing is I would end up getting potassium in an IV and I was fine... .finally one night I laid in the bed and felt severe cramping in my back on my left side almost felt like my ribs in the back was broke..  No other symptoms..when I arrived at the hospital they did an EKG.... But my monitors read a heart beat between 12-18 BPM then it would shoot o the charts highs of 160-180.. I was immediately transported to a specialty hospital where I under went surgery and a pacemaker was placed..tachycardia and bradycardia was the cause.... As months proceeded... I started getting light headed, dizzy, sweats... Confusion... Passing out, I went to the dr for several months and was told it was my pacemaker needing adjusted, well u can only adjust a pacemaker so much either way.. Turn it up or turn it down... When they realized something else was going on.. A ultrasound was done of my heart to determine I had MVP Mitra valve prolapse.. In turn meant my heart floods with blood now and then and OUT goes the lights!! I pass out n hit the ground... My cardiologist says "it's not sever enough to have the corrective surgery but it bad what th hell Kind of answer is that? Over time I've learned to know what is going on in me.. So I can adjust and balance my life around this little set back and take time doing certain chores not to over exert myself to keep the MVP from disrupting my life any further...

I had very similar problems, but not quite as bad as yours. I was getting heart beats up to around 120, sweating & dizziness & thought i had a heart problem. It turned out i was type 2 diabetic. Once i changed my diet & a few meds each day i have been fine ever since. Might be worth asking the Doc for a simple 2 part blood test to find out.

Hi, I'm really glad I found this post. I have very similar problems and have a 2 year old daughter. I had an episode of afib, 3 yers ago. They put me on beta blockers and anti anxiety meds. I have had bad anxiety for over 7 years now. I'm 25, and have been on medicine for it on and off. I'm currently off the anxiety meds but still taking the beta blocker. I found out I'm pregnant with our second, and it seems I have been getting more and more days where my heart starts fluttering or feels like its flip flopping in my chest. I tend to have irregular breathing because of how anxious I always am. I alway worry that there is something wron with my heart. I have had ultrasounds and ekgs done and they said it is fine structurally.  I'm really scared that it will cause problems when I'm in labor. Anxiety is a very hard thing to deal with. I've also been to therapy but mostly it hasn't helped much because I know I worry, the problem is turning the worry off once I get in tht mode. Meds has been the only thing that sort I helps but I don't want to be on any while being pregnant. I wish you the best of luck and it helps to talk about it. My greatest advice is finding someone who will listen to all your worrys. And getting it checked out by a doctor could help relieve some anxiety too.

Hi there,
I just started taking Magnesium Citrate, L-Taurine, coQ-10, and Omega 3.
Do you know how long it takes to see the effects of magnesium? and how much to take.  Also, have you used the other 3 that I mentioned?  I am going to see a Naturopath to find out dosage and times to take etc... I have read that it can take a few weeks to feel any improvement.  Any info you can give me would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi, check your thyroid. I had same problems like you, irregular heartbits, lots of anxiety and distress for years. Even a cardiologist prescribed me a pacemaker... imagine how afraid i was. Last year i went to see a diferent doctor. She told me that my symptoms corresponded to a thyroid problem. Deficiencies of minerals and vitamins that sick thyroid. Thyroid is a gland that move lots of mechanism in human bodies and is very important to be regulated in women. Now i know I'm hypothyroid and treatment is helping me a lot.
Hope you can have a good diagnostic and relief.

Hi everyone, I'm also going threw this.. It has been going on for 2 months right after I delivered my baby which it can be the cause of it but not sure. Everytime I move or get up and start walking my heart starts racing to like 140-160 and it goes back down when sitting to like 80. Weird right? Yeah, I see a cardiologist and a regular dr and they told me it was due to my body trying to adjust itself.. I been so sick and now I also get so much panic attacks because of it. I have all these other weird symptoms line hot rushes and cold sweaty hands and feet. But they tell me it's my anxiety. Who knows maybe it is... I been put on a ssri and on a beta-blocker. They told me I have something called 'POTS' it stands for postural orthastatic tachycardia syndrome. They say there's no cure for it but can be treated with the meds I'm taking.. It ***** big time because I can't do much during the day and having a 5 year old and a 2 month old makes me more depressed because I can't even seems to take care of them.. I been to the e.r a couple of times because of my panic attacks so they say.. And I'm going threw so so much stress an I wonder if that causes my heart rate to stay elevated. I am planning on seeing a therapist and staying on the meds and hope it resolves on it's own.. Best wishes for you! And you are not alone :)

It sounds like you both have some sort of tachycardia that needs to be addressed.  Tachycardia in a healthy heart is not a major concern for your overall long term heart healthy but you will want to get it treated and fixed or managed at some point so I suggest getting to a doctor to get the type you have diagnosed so you can take steps towards a solution.  Take care.
