Constant Chest Pressure

When I was about 10 years old I blacked out a couple of times after exercise, so I went to a cardiologist who ran some tests and told me that I had an irregular heartbeat that would go away as I got older. He said my blood pressure was low, prescribed me some salt pills, and I never really had any problems since then.

I am now 20 years old, in college, and keeping a healthy schedule compared to most college students. I eat three times a day, sleep 8 hours a night, though I don't really exercise except walking across campus to class. A couple of weeks ago I started feeling pressure in my chest. It wasn't anything painful, just uncomfortable, and I assumed that I was developing some congestion due to a cold. 2 weeks later, I still have the pressure in my chest, but I never developed a cough or fever or anything else that I would associate with a common sickness. It seems to get worse when I do have to walk up stairs or exert myself, but it never goes away even when I have been resting for several hours. This morning I was almost late to a class so I was out of breath when I got there. Everything was normal but about 40 minutes into the class I started to feel really weak and dizzy and I broke out in a sweat, I almost thought I might pass out. But when class was over I stood up and everything felt fine, though the pressure and weakness is still there. Should I make an appointment to see my doctor or wait to see if any more symptoms come up?

Well, it's probably nothing heart related. Two things I would ask myself: 1) Did you have any caffeine or similar stimulant before your dizzy spell? 2) Does the pain make it hard to breathe? If it's yes to either, then it's nothing serious. You can still get congestion without other cold symptoms.

Anywho, I'd say it's not heart-related unless the pain feels like a crushing, or if it radiates (spreads) to the jaw or left arm. Something might be up, but I don't think it's your ticker.

Good luck, as always.

Hello...

I think that you should make an appointment to see you Dr and definitely not wait for further symptoms to crop up.

When your Dr told you at the age of 10 that you had an "irregular" heartbeat, was it due to an arrhythmia or a heart murmur?
