My heart rate keeps dropping

A week ago I woke up and my heart rate was 150 so I went to the Er and they did an EKG and said it looked like my past ones. Before this my average heart rate was 85. I'm 18 years old and have been smoking for four years and drink a lot of soda. I am now awaiting an appointment to be made at a cardiologist as I have been referred to one. My problem is that for a couple days after that my heart rate was still  high for me (100-112, sometimes up to 120) but since yesterday it's been dropping. It was in the mid seventies yesterday which is really low for me and tonight it is in the low sixties. I have been eating healthier and going on 30 minute walks but only for about a week. What's going on?

a 150 rate waking up is pretty high.  If you noticed that it stopped beating at 150 within one beat it could be an svt but if it was a gradual slow down it is likely being caused by something outside the heart.  It could be related to a number of things.  It could be simple dehydration or it could be a thyroid issue which can be easily checked with a blood test.  You may want to see a regular doctor to get a full blood panel done to see if there are any problems going on. Like Jerry said, sugar and caffeine themselves may be part of the problem and quitting smoking would be in your best interests.   I smoked for 25 years and the doctor said it was the best thing I could have done for my heart.  It's good you are being seen by a cardiologist but until then or if it happens again try drinking lots of water and see if it helps it slow down.  Try not to worry about it being a bit slow.  It could be that  your nervous system took over trying to slow it on its own and it will regulate after a while but do go and get checked out by the doctors to see if there are any underlying issues other than simple dehydration causing the issue.  Best of luck sorting it out and keep us posted on how you are doing.  Take care.

Soda can have a lot of caffeine - and sugar or worse, stop the soda and see what happens.  The smoking is a guaranteed health risk.

Sounds like you are on the right path forward, keep to it.  Now is the time, when young, to build your health so you will live to be old someday.
