Rapid Heartbeat Problem

Hello, I am 29 y/o male, 5'10" 230#, with high blood pressure, which I take Lotrel for. I also take prilosec and a multivitamin daily. In the last week, I have had a very high resting pulse rate, usually 120-140, even with a normal blood pressure reading. Walking around the house, or at work has left me hyperventilating, with my heart racing, When i lay down I can feel it pounding. I went to a local 24 hour clinic over the past weekend, and had an EKG, chest x-ray, and blood drawn to test for thyroid and other problems - but they all checked out ok. This feeling will not go away though. I have been under a lot of stress with job hunting and finishing my Ph.D. but if it was a panic attack I'd be surprised because it's constant (the pulse rate never gets below 100) and it only gets worse when I move around. The suggestion from the doctor the other day was to head to the ER for more tests if it did not improve. Is it time to heed that advice, or perhaps return to my normal MD? What are some issues that could be causing this problem?

I am experiencing very much the same symptoms.  I would really like ot know if anxiety and panic attacks can cause high heart rates (tachycardias) and making you feel faint, or if it is form a heart condition.... I know how you feel, it is scarey and I can't offer you any advice because i am in the same boat here, but rest assured you are not alone.

I remember a doctor telling me once that he considered anything up to 120 to be anxiety.  Mine used to beat over 100 beats.  Even just raising my arms up would speed it up.  I think they call that inappropriate Sinus Tach?   Anyway, I finally went on tenormin and it keeps my pulse nice and low.  I would just go back to your normal MD.

I would seek help with a rest HR at 120 and higher.  But as you have already gotten a basic check and nothing was found, I'd recommend trying real hard to relax....that may mean finding something relaxing that take all your attention, then see what your HR is.  If Lotrel is a Beta Blocker, it should also help lower you HR.  I haven't looked up the medication, you must know.  That being the case, it is even more troubling that you have a high HR.

If you getting ready for your Ph.D dissertation I'd suspect that you are under sufficient pressure to stimulate heart misbehavior.   Try to find something you can get your mind "around" sufficient to be calm and check HR.

That's the best I can suggest at this point.
