The magnesium miracle

I recently purchased the book “The Magnesium Miracle” from Carolyn Dean, M.D., N.D. (available at Amazon.com). I will quote some parts of the book.

About 60-65 percent of all our magnesium is housed in our bones and teeth. The remaining 35-40 percent is found in the rest of the body, including muscle and tissue cells and body fluids. The highest concentrations are in the heart and brain cells, so it is no wonder that the major symptoms of magnesium deficiency affect the heart and the brain. These are also the two organs that have considerable electrical activity, measured by EKG and EEG. Our blood contains only 1 percent of the body total magnesium.

Magnesium deficiency conributes to abnorma heart rhythms, possibly because magnesium is responsible for mantaining normal potasium and sodium concentrations inside heart muscle cells. A balance of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium allows for normal heart muscle contraction and mantain normal heartbeat. Cardiac arrhytmia occurs when other, less suitable areas of the heart are forced to assume the role of the central pacemaker when it becomes damaged or irritated by lack of oxygen due to blocked blood vessels, caused by drugs (including caffeine), hormonal imbalance or deficiency of magnesium. These new pacemakers are even more sensitive to magnesium deficiency but are responsive to magnesium therapy. Magnesium is also an accepted treatment for ventricular arrhythmias (PVC, VT, etc)

SUPPLEMENT FOR HEART DISEASE
Magnesium taurate: 125 mg four times per day
Coenzyme Q10: 30 mg three times a day
Bromelain: 500 mg three times a day between meals
Vitamine E as mixed tocopherols: 400 IU twice a day
Crategus tincture: 20 drops two or three times a day
Rutin or quercitin (bioflavonoids): 500 mg daily
Biotin: 5 mg daily

MAGNESIUM
IV magnesium is the most absorbable form of magnesium and magnesium oil is the second best. Third best are the oral forms magnesium glycinate, magnesium taurate and magnesium oratate. Fourth magnesium citrate, but since it is ussualy cheaper than other oral forms, it’s become the most popular. Magnesium oxide is a distinct fifth and very poorly absorbed, but it makes a great laxative.

Magnesium Taurate
by Cardiovascular Research Ltd.

Magnesium Taurate is a scientifically-designed amino acid-mineral complex. Magnesium Taurate is a fully reacted complex and not simply a blend of the two materials. Unlike some other magnesium preparations, magnesium taurate does not cause gastrointestinal upset. Magnesium Taurate is routinely used to help support healthy heart rhythm. Studies have revealed magnesium & the amino acid taurine have some interchangeable & potentiating roles. Magnesium helps to regulate taurine & taurine can substitute for magnesium when magnesium is deficient. Both taurine & magnesium stabilize cell membranes. Both exert sedative effects & inhibit the excitability of nerve cells throughout the central nervous system.

I purchased magnesium taurate at the Vitamine Shoppe or you can check it out at amazon.com

Hi charmednks,

Nice to meet you too. Like you I have/had a high heart rate. In may 2009 I have been diagnosed with mild MVP with mild MR. Since then I am taking for the first time in my life a beta blocker (bb) nebivolol (Bystolic) 2.5 mg. I also have high blood pressure (bp). I am happy with the med because I do not get the tachycardia anymore and it has mild side effects. On the other hand I noticed that since I started taking the bb I have more PVC's a day. Thats is why I started taking 500 mg Magnesium Oxide and 2000 mg Omega 3 fish oil a day and I am very happy with the results. In june 2009 I did a 24 hour bp monitor. The results exellent.

About Vitamin E

Recent advances in vitamin E research show that vitamin E is a family of nutrients, not just a single compound. Vitamin E consists of several forms of tocopherol: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. Scientists believe different components in vitamin E may be responsible for different actions. Alpha-tocopherol, which researchers long felt was the active component responsible for any protective antioxidant effects. However, when tested in scientific studies, results for vitamin E often varied widely. These variations occurred because the vitamin E supplements used - either natural or synthetic - contained components other than alpha-tocopherol. Good vitamin E product should provide mixed tocopherols.

Natural vitamin E preserves the integrity of cellular membranes throughout the body by scavenging free radicals that break down membrane lipids.

Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant. The naturally occuring d-alpha tocopherol is the most biologically active form of vitamin E. Vitamin E, a powerful free radical scanvenger, is considered the first line of defense against lipid peroxidation. It protects the integrity of the body's cellular membranes, and has the ability to unite oxygen and prevent it from being converted into toxic peroxides. Vitamin E plays a beneficial role in the cellular respiration of muscles, especially cardiac and skeletal muscles. It also causes dilation of blood vessels. In addition, vitamin E plays a role in nucleic acid and protein metabolism, mitochondrial function, and hormonal production. Vitamin E is crucial to proper cellular function; it protects and supports all physiological functions through its free radical scavenging activity, especially cardiovascular functioning. Food Sources: Wheat germ oils, nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables.

I will also suggest that you give magnesium a try. Maybe your high hear rate is because you have stress, anxiety, dehydration, a magnesium defieciency or other reasons. Magnesium slows the heart rate as magnesium relaxes the heart. I will recomend you to consult a doctor before you take any supplements.

I encourage you take natural supplements for your health,

All the best,

Amethyst

Hi it is so nice to meet you, I have had a long road of being put on Beta Blocker or Toprol XL for a high heart rate one day it went up to 120 but looking back I realize it was in my opinion my thyroid it was out of whack and I was suffering from Adrenal Fatigue,

I was on Toprol XL for nearly 4 years and the drug went south on me the side effects became insane and was dropping my blood pressure constantly...
So I never had High Blood Pressure before the meds. So I cut it down for 6 weeks or so., and then what followed was nothing short of a nightmare,, I had a SVT of over 200 bpm for 2 hours and it kept on for 2 months, I also had very severe high blood pressure from getting off of it as well,,

So then they put me on another drug for 10 weeks while trying to rebound off the Toprol and it's number 1 side effect was tachycardia go figure huh lol.. they kept me on it thinking I had a UTI repeatedly come to find out I only had one it was not what I needed on top of the hell of getting off the Toprol,

So now been off both for a week and off the Toprol for 3 months and my heart rate has really been high when moving around, and my body is very weak,. I have been to the Cardio Doc and they find nothing wrong with my heart in fact they are telling me how healthy it seems to be,, So I guess I am dealing with the aftermath of these drugs.

But I am doing everything natural I have been taking this Cranberry Supplement that has Vitamin C and Vitamin E in it, and it keeps my heart rate down a good 20 beats walking around but I saw you wrote about you take Vitamin E is that just for your overall health or is that because it helps the heart I really want to know.

Because I plan on starting the magnesium, calcium and Vitamin D, but I have to wait til next week because the other drug they had me on you couldn't take those with or have severe reactions again imagine that huh lol.. and its not out of my system just yet almost though.

I am also taking Garlic and that really really helps my heart rate go down as well it will go from 100 resting to 88 and stay.. and is way better for you then beta blockers.

So that is my question.. Thanks sorry I wrote a book but I will do anything to get healthy without drugs,, they have devastated my body my Thyroid seems to be acting right and my blood pressure is 100/80 without meds I just don't need them. I dont have Tachycardia attacks anymore or palpation's.. its just high when moving around anywhere from 120 to 140 but the vitamins really really help..Thanks for listening,

that's good info, thanks! I've had pvc's for the past 15 years, and my naturopath first put me on magnesium (chelate, 500mg, 2x/day). I've been taking this for several years now and have noticed a huge improvement in my pvc's, however, I still had times when the heart was freaking out... Since last November, I've also added 2x fish oil (anti-reflux coated ones), and somehow, that's totally changed my life. I continue with the magnesium though, as I'm just used to it I guess. My pvc's are linked to what I eat/drink, so I watch out for certain triggers there and avoid them (caffeine, alcohol, pastry/yeast, white bread, etc).

I don't see the Magnesium Chelate mentioned in your info? Any info on it?

I am currently taking magnesium oxide 250 mg two times a day for the last 5 weeks. Although it is poorly absorbed I noticed improvement with the PVC's. I do not get the PVC so much a day (maybe one or two), some days I am PVC free or if I get a PVC it is a mild one. I do not want to jinx myself but I didn't felt a PVC for the last seven days.

Where I lived is difficult to get magnesium taurate. That is why I ordered from amazon.com through the Vitamin Shoppe. I am very excited to try that out. Maybe it will help to be PVC free for a longer period of time (I hope for life).

The price for mag oxide is $ 7 for 100 tablets. The price for mag taurate is $ 23 for 180 tablets.

I have a lot of information about magnesium for instance magnesium -deficient conditions like anxiety and depression, cholesterol and hypertension, heart disease.

Feel free to ask.
