Actually, I'm not an expert, but I read that ablation has fewer complications when performed on adults for certain SVT's (with AP), and idiopathic VT. For this relatively narrow range of conditions ablation can be recommended as a replacement to drug therapy even if drug therapy is working. For small children, and other types of conditions drug therapy is usually the recommended treatment, especially if it is working. This is because the complication rates of ablation can be fairly high for some types of conditions.
I think I might see your point. In this country, I dont think a doctor saves money by steering you away from an ablation, unless he is required to give you one for free for some reason. The cost in my country is actually pretty high, and everybody wants a doctor who has done alot of these, so there is already some incentive to do the ablation. People here are well advised to educate themselves, ensure that their medical care practitioners are well qualified, and have a history of making good decisions.
Of course i am assuming you are talking about a catheter ablation to cure WPW. This only works if the AP is nearer to the inside of the heart instead of the outside. If it is outside, then open heart, or an epicardial ablation can be done from the outside. My understanding is that this is still a relatively new technique in curing WPW, and it comes with risks of its own. Maybe not used as a first line treatment, especially if drugs are working?
As I know of in the early 1980s, wpw was performed by open heart surgery. I refused so they put a pacemaker in. In 1985 they did the His bundle ablation.
I think they want to see how active are your pathways. If you failed the stress test, the doctors still can perform a cardiac catheterization to find out. I think the doctor tried to save money for you to find out the pathway type on stress test rather to perform a catheterization. Didn't the doctors stand beside you when they performed the stress test? Both of my stress test, the doctors stood beside me and watching the ekg. Both of mine stress test were terminated by the doctors not by myself. One exercise (nuclear stress test) time was lasted 1.5min and the other (treadmill) lasted 5.17min.
May be this time when your heart goes fast then go to the ER and caught an ekg to show him. Or ask for another stress test to torture your heart and make him satisfy. Some wpw would show up until the pathway starts conducting. Mine one were like that sometimes the doctors always said "your heart is normal, nothing wrong!" Don't disappoint, keep trying. Take care.
Are you talking about heart "surgery" or an "abaltion". They susually do an ablation it is done while you are awake. Your doctor sounds like a real jeark I think you need another doctor. Mine is making me feel at easy(still scared). He told me that there is a very small cahnce of needing a pacemaker.
Google "catheter ablation"and read about it. I doubt they are doing open heart surgery for WPW. That is hwta they think I have and I am having an abaltion.
Oh and what the insurance sompant does not pay gets written off by the hospital. You will have a certain amount youhave to pay and between that and insurance it is taken care of
