My Dad was in for a few hours and then went home.
They don't replace the battery like you would in a flashlight. The unit is completely sealed for your safety. They disconnect the leads and connect a new unit. It's tested and programmed and you're sent on home. Still have to follow all the precautions about no lifting, no raising the arms too high, etc.
wow I haven't read anyone else getting out so quick.
I was set to have my whole unit replaced and they told me 1-3 days depending on how surgery went with the leads, thankfully I don't have to do that yet.
I had a pacer change out last May 2010. It was a breeze. I arrived at the hospital early in the morning, had the procedure at 8:00. I really was over in 60 min. I was awake for most of the procedure and felt no pain. After laying in recovery for a few hours, I left the hospital and was home by 2:00PM. I felt great. Since I did not have the leads changed, I did not have to keep my arm still. I was back to my regular routine that afternoon.
ksig
normally you stay in overnight to see how the new unit is doing; the next morning they test to make sure everything is ok - but I've read other patients stay in longer depending on their situation
