The day has 24 hours,

Besides concerns about the need to take with food, or not one just divides 24hours by the number of individual doses.

1 a day, what can I say, one a day, you pick the time, for me that would be 8 am.
2 a day, take one every 12 hours, good for me 8 am and 8pm.
3 a day, take every 8 hours, following the above start time I'd go 8 am, 4 pm, 12am,  If you don't stay awake 16 hours a day you'll need to make one of the intervals less than 8 hours.

My experience has been just the above, doctors have never told me what time of day to take my pills, but might suggest taking with breakfast, before breakfast depending on any need to avoid taking with food.

wow 40mg propranolol (Inderal) 3times daily to begin with? that much didn't have any side effects except lowered heart rate?

I started on 10mg 3x daily; but found too many breakthroughs lately so my dr switched me to Inderal LA. last week.... my dr explained back in 2010 that the lower doses were better to begin with to get your body used to it and so I wouldn't become immune to it so quickly.  My system is very sensitive and it only takes a small amount of meds to begin with for me to notice it.

I would def talk to your dr and see what he says; could be the meds or something else - no double dosing; I was told to skip the dose if it's within 3-4 hours of my next dose

the one thing that is concerning me is that when i first started taking them a week ago my heart was slowing down about 50 bpm. now when i take them my heart doesn't seem to be slowing at all about 70-80 bpm and they seem to be forceful beats . it's as though there not having the same affect as when i first started taking them.

Please do not take the propranolol as a double dose. A good way to do this is to take one dose when you get up, one dose at bed time, and the second dose sometime in the middle. 6-8 hours in between each dose but no double dosing  ;-)

You need to talk to your doctor about this.  What was prescribed?  I take a different beta blocker, Atenolol 25 mg. up to to tablets a day, and I split them into 1/4's and delay a dose if my blood pressure or heart rate is too low.  I have been doing this for years.  Mine is not extended release, so it doesn't stay in the bloodstream as long.  Are you checking your blood pressure and heart rate?  Drinking water will bring your blood pressure up if it gets too low.  I would be cautious about taking it more often than prescribed.  Hope this is of some help.
