beta blocker question

I have recently stopped taking the beta blocker Toprol xl (generic version), and my pulse has been higher than normal. On the medicine it was around 80, and before the med it was around 88. Today I felt really poundy, and I noticed my pulse was around 120, I recently took it and it was 97. I was wondering if this was a side effect of coming off the medicine? I weaned myself like the doctor said taking my dose every other day for a week.   I was on a small dose of half a 25mg tablet. If you have had any experience with this, please share. Thank you!!

I was on Toprol XL also and I hated the way it made me feel.  My dr weened me off in about 4 days.  I did notice alittle difference, but it seems to be back to normal now.  I went off about 2 weeks ago and I feel better.  I still get palpitations, but doc says I am ok.  I would rather not be on the toprol.  I hated it.  I read that there are side effects of coming off of them, but I assume they will get better, that is just my own personal experience.

My doctor said to wean off of it in 3 to 5 days, but I prolonged it to about 8 days. I also thought it was rather quick.  But then again I did not go to med school .  Do you think that everything will go back to normal after a while? Thank you to all that have responded.

Obviously I meant to say "it could" not "I could."

Yes, I could be a side effect of coming off of the med.  You may need to wean off more slowly as you came off rather quickly.

Well, I have tried the same thing a couple of times.  Was first on Atenolol 25 mg for three years and did VERY well.  I tried to wean myself off VERY SLOW and there is no doubt your pulse goes up as a result.  First time I did wean myself all the way off but since then weaning has not worked for me.

I had a return of PVCs big time and went back to 25mg.
