THANKS so much! exactly what i needed to know.
i tried the carotid artery massage but it only calmed down my palpitations without really bringing down my hr that much. so i got confused on how i should be feeling

Thanks!!! Good day!

normal hr is between 60 - 100 for men it is about 80 and slightly lower for women
i would feel if svt is the diagnosis ,then when u get the palps it is svt and if they last long periods maybe u could try the massage ,if u have been shown how to do this right ,i know my svt before i had a ablation would last minutes to an hour and would be quiet fast always over 180 and in the end had to go beta blockers and than anti arrhythmias to control it as i was having hits everyday ,some might only get this very little ,sometimes if the hr goes up anyway ,it will generally fall back down slowly over a few minutes ,svt generally cuts back to a normal rate quiet rapid ,hence the thund and feeling sickly after the rapid rise ,i am not sure how long u have it ,but some try beta blockers to good effect ,sometimes on a just needed basis and it may help u ,other are able to put up with the symptoms
caffiene ,lack of sleep ,stress, large meals ,will all have a effect on bringing these on ,but if you are just sitting down doing whatever and the hr jumps for no reason ,this would svt ,
svt can be cured in 90% of cases with ablation ,done during an ep study ...they are considered more of a nuisance than a threat ..
the hr rate will rise for lots of natural reasons in the body ,exercise ,digestion anxiety etc ,it is just getting to know and recognizing how u feel when your hr is in normal rhythm and when it is in svt rhythm,,if u look up valsalva maleuver's {forcibly exhaling against a closed airway} u will see ways to stop this when it happens.
have u tried taking fish oils they also seem to help others in here and are good for the body anyway ,,also keeping well hydrated and stay away from all caffeine ,,,

hi there,

i do have SVT diagnosed. but how do i know whether my palpitation is really caused  by a SVT episode or just a faster heart rate if it happens?

my doctor wants me to massage the carotid artery when i feel sudden palpitations and fast heart rate. but to my knowledge this is for stopping SVT. what if it's not SVT and i did it? will it cause harm to my body?

it is hard to say without a proper diagnosis ,and this can be confirmed with an ekg ,during an eposide ,or by the wearing of an event monitor which traces the electrial activity of the heart ,to get a better picture of what is going on when u are having these palps ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,unless u had all of these already  but in general the duration of svt can be anything from a few minutes up to 1 to 2 days. Some people experience no symptoms, others:
Dizzyness, the feeling you might faint (syncope)
Shortness of breath
Pale color
Chest tightness
Chest pain
Anxiety
Rapid pulse (140-250 bpm) is usually felt and may be erratic ,there are different types of svt but all come under the atrial area in general ..if u are having beats up to and over 150 ,it could well be svt esp if they stop all of a sudden ....some find by splashing cold water on the face can stop these ,or by bearing down ,,,,

are u seeing a cardio already ..or have u been treated with meds//possible ablation
hope that helps a little
