magnesium supplements

Are they OK to  take with flecainide, I have heard that they can help but what sort to buy and take is hard to know and where to obtain in England.  I know magnesium with taurate is the best for heart probs.  Anyone out there who knows anything would be great to hear from you.

Thanks for your comments, I forgot to mention I was having tremors in my hand and that is how I somehow got on to sites about magnesium, then I discovered that it has beneifits for arrythmia sufferers too.  After extensive research I have found magnesium with taurine to be the one for heart protection as well, deficiency in magnesium cannot always be found easily as blood tests will often show normal readings only to find after months of other tests that deep cell deficiency exists.
My doctor is away at the moment so I have just bought a good quality magnesium and taurine supply on the internet and as this tremor is driving me mad I am trying it out in the lowest RDA as of today.  I have also ordered a book calles The Magnesium Miracle by Dr Carolyn Dean which will arrive next week so I will keep you all informed of any new info I obtain and how it is affecting my health.  Anne

Are you sure?

Magnesium is a mineral, but I always thought it worked as a Ca antagonist. The side effects of too high blood levels of Mg is similar to high doses of CCBs.

is_something_wrong is correct that Magnesium is used for specific arrhthmias Most important among these are ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular fibrillation (VF), long QT and torsades de pointes. Magnesium is a mineral (not a Ca++ blocker)that has been studied as far back as 1900's for numerous indications.
Magnesium should be used cautiouly in pt's who are diabetics or have renal disease. Although I believe it can be used with Flecainide each pt is different from one to another so this is why I suggest you ask your Dr what may good or not good for you to take.

Interesting question.

Magnesium is actually an antiarrhythmic drug (calcium blocker) and I tend to get bradycardia (slow heart rate) if I use magnesium with beta blockers (even if I take beta blockers in a very low dosage). I know calcium blockers such as Verapamil is not supposed to be used with beta blockers. Flecainide is not a beta blocker, but it does have some similar abilities (reducing heart contractility to some degree). Please ask your doctor and share the answer, I'm curious about this.

Hi
Althought I do not know of any specific cross reaction between flecainide and Mg, I would recommend that you speak with your Dr before taking any supplements that can interfere with your electrolyte balance. Cardiac arrhythmias are very sensitive to electrlyte imbalance and altering the balance even the slightest in some patients can predispose you to increase in arrhythmias.
All the best.
